SOFTBALL SWEEPS DIVISION-LEADING ADELPHI, 4-3, 4-2, ON “SENIOR DAY”

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior third baseman Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) recorded three hits to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins rallied for a 4-3 walk-off victory in the opener and then recorded a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

Prior to the first pitch of the game one, the senior class of Meagan Malarkey (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott/Broome C.C.), Mackenzie Dreher (Hinckley, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell), Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) and Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) were honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.

Adelphi started the scoring in the opening game with two runs after just three batters. Center fielder Krista King led off with a single to the shortstop and then scored on a one-out home run to left field by Division II Player of the Year candidate Brenna Martini.

The Dolphins took advantage of an Adelphi error in the bottom of the third to cut their deficit in half. Reynolds reached on an error to start the frame and then moved to second as junior shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) was hit by a pitch. After ground out, Mascari grounded out to the third baseman to drive in Reynolds.

Le Moyne tied the score at two in the fifth with one run on two hits. Case reached on a bunt single with one out, stole second and then scored on a two-out infield single by Mascari.

Adelphi regained the lead in the sixth with one run on two hits. After catcher Nicoletta Cuccio and Martini drew walks to start the inning, second baseman Nicole Camera singled to right field to load the bases. Designated player Megan Lewis then singled to the second baseman to drive in Cuccio.

The Dolphins evened the score for the second with a run on one hit in the sixth. Dreher walked to open the frame and was replaced at first by freshman pinch-runner Lauren Zazzaro (Southington, Conn./Southington). After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Cawley singled to left field to knock in Zazzaro.

Le Moyne took advantage of an Adelphi error in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off victory. Mascari led off with a double to left center on the ninth pitch of her at-bat and then was replaced at second by freshman pinch-runner Lauren Floyd (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). After Floyd moved to third on a wild pitch, she scored the winning run as Zazzaro reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder.

Sophomore righty Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) earned her 16th win of the season after tossing the final two innings, while yielding one run on four hits. Lindsay Mapes took the loss for the Panthers after allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and five walks over six and one-third innings.

The Panthers struck first again in the nightcap with a run on two hits. After Martini doubled to left center with two outs, Camera drove her in with a single to the shortstop.

The lead didn't last long as the Dolphins scored twice in the bottom of the first on two hits and an Adelphi error. With two outs, junior center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) reached on an error by Martini, which allowed Trotta, who walked with one out, to advance to third. Sophomore second baseman Tess Andrews (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) followed with a single to left field to drive in Trotta and tie the score. Dreher then singled to center to plate Riley with the go-ahead run.

Adelphi answered right back with one run in the second inning on one hit and one Le Moyne error. Right fielder Stephanie Staiano reached on an error by the catcher to start the inning and advanced to third on consecutive sacrifice bunts. Left fielder Christina Palmenteri then singled to left field to drive in Staiano.

Le Moyne took the lead for good in the fifth with two runs on two infield hits and two Adelphi errors. Zazzaro reached on an error by the shortstop to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trotta. After Mascari singled to the pitcher and was replaced at first by Malarkey, Riley drove in Zazzaro as she reached on another error by Martini. After Andrews singled to the shortstop to load the bases, Malarkey raced home on a passed ball for a 4-2 lead.

Eastman tossed three scoreless innings in relief, while striking out three, to earn her conference-best 17th victory of the year. Kristin Fealy allowed four runs (all unearned) on five hits over six innings in the loss.

Le Moyne (28-14, 14-7 NE-10, 11-6 SW), which has its most regular season victories since the 2009 team went 36-10, closes out the regular season on Sunday against the Panthers at 12:00 p.m. If the Dolphins win, Le Moyne, Adelphi and Pace University will finish in a three-way tie for first place in the Southwest Division with a record of 12-6. Based on the conference's tiebreaking procedure, Pace would be the top seed, Le Moyne would claim the second seed and Adelphi would be seeded third. If Adelphi wins on Sunday, the Panthers win the division outright at 13-5, while Pace (12-6) would be the second seed and Le Moyne (11-7) would be seeded third and host the University of New Haven on Tuesday in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at 3:00 p.m.
