Pleasantville, N.Y. – First baseman Garrett De Lotto doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to give second-seeded Pace University a 4-3 win over the third-seeded Le Moyne College baseball team in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Tuesday afternoon at Peter X. Finnerty Field.
The Dolphins now await a possible bid in the NCAA Championships. The 56-team field will be announced on Sunday at 10:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
The Dolphins opened the scoring with a run in the second inning on a solo home run inside the left field foul pole by senior third baseman/pitcher
Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to lead off the frame.
Pace answered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Right fielder Cory Capaldi led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout. Designated hitter James Wynne followed with a double to right center to drive in Capaldi. Third baseman Nick LoBello then doubled over the fence in left field to knock in Wynne with the go-ahead run.
The Setters extended their lead in the third on a lead-off home run to left center by center fielder John Kukura.
Le Moyne tied the score in the top of the fourth with two runs on three hits. Wright singled to right field with two outs and came around to scored on a double to left center by senior designated hitter
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit). Senior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) followed with a single through the right side to knock in West with the tying run.
Pace scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on one hit. Left fielder Michael Gulino was hit by the first pitch of the inning and then moved to second on a groundout. De Lotto then doubled to left center to knock in Gulino with the go-ahead run.
Freshman pitcher
Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) took the loss out of the bullpen after yielding one run on two hits over two and one-third innings, while striking out two. Wright finished the contest with four of Le Moyne's seven hits. Tim Deegan earned the win in relief for Pace after tossing three scoreless innings.
