DESTINATION: DENVER! SECOND-RANKED WOMEN’S LACROSSE GRINDS OUT 6-5 WIN OVER FIFTH-RANKED LIU POST IN NCAA SECOND ROUND

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior attacker Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored the game-winning goal with 2:10 remaining as the second-ranked and second-seeded Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team registered a 6-5 victory over fifth-ranked and third-seeded LIU Post in the second round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.

The Dolphins, who tied the program's record for most wins in a season with 18, advance to the NCAA semifinals for the second straight year and for the fourth time in six years. The Dolphins will take on top-ranked and top-seeded Adelphi University on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. (Eastern) at the Regency Athletic Complex on the campus of Metropolitan State University of Denver in Denver, Colorado.

The six goals are the fewest in a win for the Dolphins since defeating Sacred Heart, 6-5, on March 16, 2002 in Fairfield, Connecticut and are the fewest in a home victory in the program's 23-season history.

As they did in the regular season meeting on March 5, the Dolphins scored the first three goals of the game. Freshman attacker Bryanna Fazio (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) got the scoring started just over nine minutes into the game off a curl around the left side of the cage. Senior attacker Erica Geremia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/SUNY Cortland) doubled Le Moyne's lead nine minutes later with her team-best 59th goal of the season from the edge of the crease off a move down the left alley. In an extra-player situation, Fazio gave the Dolphins a 3-0 lead with 9:44 left by converting a free-position shot for her 54th tally of the year.

LIU Post broke through with 5:19 left in the first half as Ryan McKinney scored off a free-position shot.

Fazio extended Le Moyne's lead back to three, 4-1, 2:16 into the second half off a left-to-right move in front of the net.

The Pioneers, who defeated the Dolphins in the 2012 NCAA semifinals en route to their first of back-to-back national championships, tallied the next three goals over a span of 10:52 to knot the score at four apiece. McKinney started the run by netting a free-position goal with 25:54 to play. Just under two minutes later, Emily Delaney scored her 45th goal of the season from the left edge of the crease off a pass from Alexis Newman, who was set up for a free-position attempt. Honey Roche, who had five goals in Friday's first round game against New Haven, evened the score at four with 15:02 remaining by converting a free-position shot from the right side.

Just 80 seconds later, Monnat gave the lead back to the Dolphins with her 46th goal of the season.

The Pioneers responded only 35 seconds later as Connor Bird finished off a pass from Delaney with 13:07 remaining.

Following 11 minutes of scoreless action, during which time Le Moyne had two shots saved and turned the ball over once and LIU Post had one shot saved and turned the ball over twice, the Dolphins netted the game-winning goal. After making a move from the right side, Monnat put a shot inside the far left post from the right edge of the crease with 2:10 remaining.

The Dolphins won the ensuing draw and whittled 1:47 off the clock before committing a turnover with 23 seconds left. Following a Le Moyne foul with eight seconds left, Bird was awarded a free-position attempt. Her shot was knocked down by a Le Moyne defender before it could get to the goal and the ball was scooped up by senior defender Dana Anderson (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) with four seconds left. After Bird was issued a yellow card for a dangerous follow through, Le Moyne ran out the final four seconds to close out the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Ryan Cortese (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) registered six saves, including three in each half, to earn her 17th victory of the season between the pipes. The 17 wins are the third-most in the program's history and one off the program record. Olivia Kirk, the national leader in save percentage at .580, recorded five saves in suffering the loss, her third against the Dolphins in the last 14 months.
