New Haven, Conn. – Brandon Rentas tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Southern Connecticut State University to a 5-0 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at The Ballpark at SCSU.
Southern Connecticut scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the first on three hits. Nick Lambert led off with a single to right field and then stole second. After Jake Lieberm and Kyle Hart singled to load the bases, Jake Paul drew a walk to force in Lambert.
The Owls added three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. McNeill Finn was hit by a pitch to start the frame and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jake DeRose followed with a single to plate Finn. After a double by Lambert, Lieberm singled up the middle to knock in DeRosa and Lambert.
Southern Connecticut finished the game's scoring in the sixth with one run on one hit and a Le Moyne error. Finn drew a walk to start the frame and then advanced to second on an error by the shortstop as Ethan Joyce reached on a fielder's choice. After DeRosa singled to load the bases, Lambert walked to force home Finn.
Junior
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (four earned) on nine hits over five and one-third innings, while striking out nine. Rentas struck out four in the shutout to earn his fourth win of the year.
Le Moyne (25-16, 13-8 NE-10, 8-8 SW) closes out the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State at 1:00 p.m. The Dolphins need to win both games to earn the final berth in the Northeast-10 Championship.
