WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GRINDS OUT 57-40 WIN OVER SAINT ROSE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and senior guard Nicole Riddick (Albany, N.Y./Colonie/UMass Lowell) combined for 30 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 57-40 win over The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Roberts registered 15 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists in the contest. Riddick tallied 15 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, and grabbed a team high-tying six rebounds. Senior guard Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) turned in 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.

Karissa Birthwright led the Golden Knights in the loss with 12 points, including six in the first quarter. Zoe McDonald just missed a double-double with 10 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, and nine rebounds.

The teams went back and forth in the opening quarter as neither team led by more than three points (Saint Rose, 6-3 and 8-5), while the Dolphins held a 14-12 advantage after the first 10 minutes.

The Dolphins took control of the game in the second quarter by outscoring the Golden Knights, 12-5. Five Dolphins accounted for the 12 points, led by three points each from Leszyk and Riddick. The Dolphins held the Golden Knights without a field goal for the opening 8:53 of the quarter.

Saint Rose scored six of the first eight points of the third quarter to get within five (28-23) with 4:34 remaining, but could not get any closer.

Le Moyne answered with an 8-1 run to take its largest lead of the opening three quarters. After Roberts made a lay-up, senior guard Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) connected on back-to-back three-pointers.

Saint Rose scored four of the final six points of the quarter to get within 38-28 after 30 minutes.

The Golden Knights kept the run going to start the fourth quarter by scoring the first four points to get within six (38-32) with 8:34 to play.

After the teams traded points over the next five minutes, which resulted in a 48-40 Le Moyne lead, the Dolphins scored the final nine points of the game. Senior forward Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) made a lay-up and Riddick followed with a jumper and five free throws.

Le Moyne (4-3, 2-2 NE10), which also held Saint Rose to 40 points in last year's meeting in Syracuse (82-40 on February 1), is back in action on Saturday at Pace University at 1:30 p.m.
