WOMEN’S BASKETBALL UPSETS ASSUMPTION, 62-54, TO ADVANCE TO NE10 SEMIFINALS

Worcester, Mass. – Junior forward Nicole Riddick (Albany, N.Y./Colonie/UMass Lowell) recorded a double-double to lead the third-seeded Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 62-54 upset victory over second-seeded Assumption College in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Sunday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.

With the win, Le Moyne (15-12) advances to the Northeast-10 semifinals for just the second time in 21 years in the conference and for the first time since 2002. The Dolphins will visit the Southwest Division's top seed, Adelphi University, on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Riddick registered 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while adding two assists, two blocked shots and two steals. Freshman guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led the Dolphins in scoring with 16 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Senior guard Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) was the third Dolphin in double figures with 10 points.

Kelly Carey led the Greyhounds in the loss with 17 points and six rebounds. Allison Stoddard chipped in with 15 points and three assists.

After Riddick drained a three-pointer and Stoddard made a lay-up to start the game's scoring, the Dolphins rattled off 13 straight points to open up a 16-2 lead with 1:56 left in the quarter. Riddick had four of the points, Demand tallied three and three other Dolphins each made a basket in the stretch.

Stoddard scored three points around a three-pointer by freshman guard Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) to get the Greyhounds within 19-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Assumption scored seven of the first nine points of the second to get within nine with 6:53 left in the half. Jaclyn Storey made two free throws, Stoddard converted a lay-up and then Carey buried a three-pointer.

Following five points from each team over the next four minutes, the Dolphins scored six of the last eight points of the half to take a 32-19 lead into the intermission. Millea nailed another three-pointer and Demand closed out the scoring with a lay-up.

After the teams traded points over the opening six and one-half minutes of the third quarter, the Greyhounds scored 10 of the last 12 points to get within four, 43-39, after 30 minutes of play. Carey drained consecutive three-pointers and then Stoddard made back-to-back shots in the span.

Following a three-pointer by Demand to give the Dolphins a 48-42 lead with 7:07 to play, the Greyhounds used a 7-2 run to get within one point with 3:04 left. Abby McKanna made a three-pointer and a lay-up, while Stoddard and Storey each converted one foul shot.

The Dolphins answered with eight straight points to regain control of the game. Riddick started the streak with a jumper and then Roberts buried a three-pointer and made two free throws. Junior forward Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) gave the Dolphins a 58-49 lead with 56 seconds left with a free throw to cap the 8-0 run.

Stoddard answered with a three-pointer, but Roberts and Riddick each went 2-for-2 from the foul line to close the game out.
