BASEBALL OPENS HOME SCHEDULE WITH 11-3 WIN OVER SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team opened its home schedule with an 11-3 win over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Friday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a one-out, first-pitch solo home run down the left field line by redshirt senior right fielder Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant).

The Owls got the run back in the top of the third on a pair of hits. Right fielder Griffin Garabedian led off with a single to center, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a single up the middle by left fielder Nick Lamberti.

Le Moyne took advantage of two errors by the Owls in the bottom of the fourth to score five runs, despite only recording one hit in the inning. After the first two batters of the frame were retired via fly balls, Martin, junior center fielder Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and junior first baseman Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Redshirt sophomore second baseman Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) then reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, which allowed Martin and Corapi to score. Sophomore designated hitter Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) followed with a single in front of the plate to drive in Cox. Junior left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) then reached on a dropped fly ball by the third baseman, which allowed Walsh to score, while Spinoso raced home on a throw to second to try to get Pittman out.

The Dolphins added three more runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore shortstop Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) singled to left and freshman third baseman Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) walked to start the frame and force a pitching change. After a sacrifice bunt moved Gray and Jacques up a base, Gray raced home after the shortstop turned his back after catching a pop up by Corapi for the inning's second out. Cox then launched a two-run home run to right field to make the score 9-1.

Southern Connecticut State cut into its deficit with a run on two hits in the sixth. Lamberti led off with a single to the shortstop and then advanced to third on a double to right field by first baseman Tyler Criscuolo. Third baseman Greg Zullo followed with a groundout to the second baseman to knock in Lamberti.

The Owls scored once more in the seventh on three hits. Designated hitter Connor Redahan led off with a single to center and moved to second on a one-out single to right by Garabedian. After an out and a single to right by Lamberti to load the bases, Criscuolo drew a six-pitch walk to force in Redahan.

Le Moyne completed the game's scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. After Walsh walked to start the frame, Pittman blasted a one-out home run to right field for his homer of the year.

Senior righty Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) earned his third win of the season after striking out nine batters over seven innings, while yielding three runs and nine hits. Griffin Bremer suffered his second loss of the season after allowing eight runs (three earned) on three hits and nine walks over four-plus innings, while striking out five.

Le Moyne (21-8, 9-1 NE10, 6-0 SW), which has won nine straight games, continues its series with the Owls on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m.
