Syracuse, N.Y. – First baseman Alexa DiLeo had three hits and drove in three runs to lead American International College to a sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Yellow Jackets rallied for a 3-2 win in the opener and captured the nightcap, 3-1, in eight innings.
The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the opener as DiLeo launched a solo home run to left center with one out.
Le Moyne evened the score on two hits in the third inning. Senior shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) singled to left center with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came around to second on a single to right center by senior center fielder
Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park).
The Dolphins took the lead in the fourth on three hits. Senior third baseman
Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) led off with a single to left field and was replaced at first by senior pinch-runner
Morgan Hope (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley). Following a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, sophomore right fielder
Madison DeRita (Higganum, Conn./Mercy) singled to center to put runners on the corners. Freshman second baseman
Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) then singled to left field to plate Hope.
American International regained the lead in the sixth inning with two runs on three hits. Right fielder Ashley Hughes led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a groundout. After a strikeout, shortstop Yami Lopez-Perez drew a walk on five pitches and catcher Jamie Mainez singled to left field to load the bases. Third baseman Kayla Riley followed by drawing a walk on five pitches to force in Hughes. DiLeo then singled to left field to drive in Lopez-Perez with the go-ahead run.
Freshman righty
Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) suffered her third loss of the season after allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over five and two-thirds innings, while striking out five. Case and Mascari each posted two of Le Moyne's seven hits in the contest. Alyssa Camargo earned her second win of the year after yielding two runs and seven hits over seven innings, while striking out two.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck first with one run in the first inning. Case led off with a triple to left center and then scored on a groundout by freshman catcher/designated player
Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn). With the hit, Case passed Annie Jacobs '03 for sixth on the program's all-time hits list with her 206th, while with the run, she tied Bailey Phillips '10 for the second-most runs in the program's history with 139.
American International took advantage of a Le Moyne error in the third inning to tie the score. Hughes reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to start the frame. Second baseman Sarah Baganz then reached on a bunt single between the pitcher and the first baseman. After a sacrifice bunt moved each runner up a base, DiLeo singled to left center to knock in Hughes.
The Yellow Jackets scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning via an error on the Dolphins. Mainez led off with a single down the right field line and moved to second on a six-pitch walk by Riley. Left fielder Kristen Steele then singled to left field to load the bases. Mainez was then able to score on a throwing error by the second baseman as designated player Kayla Kempf reached on a fielder's choice. After Riley was retired at home as pitcher Jillian Bedard reached on a fielder's choice, Steele scored from third on a wild pitch.
Junior righty
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) took the loss after yielding three unearned runs and seven hits over eight innings, while striking out five. Case and DeRita each tallied two of Le Moyne's eight hits. Bedard picked up her second victory of the year after striking out two over eight innings, while giving up just one run.
Le Moyne (17-10, 1-4 NE10, 1-4 SW), which was swept by American International in a doubleheader for the first time since April 19, 2001 (a span of 19 doubleheaders) and for the first time at home since April 17, 1999 (a span of 10 doubleheaders), is scheduled to return to action on Saturday at Saint Anselm College at 12:00 p.m. A determination on the ability to play and the location of that doubleheader will be made on Thursday evening.
