Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman catcher
Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) blasted a walk-off three-run home run to give the third-seeded Le Moyne College softball team a 6-4 victory over fourth-seeded University of New Haven in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
With the victory, the Dolphins advance to the second round of the NE10 Championships and will take on the Northeast Division's second seed, Saint Anselm College, on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Merrimack College, which earned hosting rights by winning the Northeast Division.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman second baseman
Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) led off the frame with her second home run of the season, a blast over the fence in center. Sophomore left fielder
Lauren Zazzaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) was hit by a pitch and stole second base and then senior shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) was intentionally walked. After Zazzaro was retired at third as Nicolosi reached on a fielder's choice, Case scored from third as senior center fielder
Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) reached on a fielder's choice.
New Haven answered with three runs in the top of the fourth. Following two fly outs to right field, left fielder Catherine Vaughan drilled a solo home run to center field. After a single up the middle by right fielder Tori Schiebe, first baseman Kristine Liptack homered to left field to give New Haven a 3-2 lead.
Le Moyne evened the score at three apiece in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of hits. Zazzaro singled to second base with one out and moved to second on a groundout. After taking third on a wild pitch, Zazzaro scored on a single to center by Nicolosi.
The Chargers regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Third baseman Taylor Luzzi walked to open the inning, advanced to second on a one-out walk by Vaughan and took third as Schiebe was hit by a pitch. Liptack then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Luzzi.
The Dolphins walked off with the win with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. McManus led off with a single to left field. Zazzaro followed with a double to right field and moved to third on a throw home, which retired McManus at the plate. After Case was intentionally walked and stole second, Nicolosi blasted a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left field for her third home run of the season.
Junior righty
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) recorded her 19th win of the season after striking out six over seven innings, while yielding four runs on five hits. Nicolosi, McManus and Zazzaro each posted two hits in the game for the Dolphins, while Zazzaro and Case each scored twice. With second run of the game, Case moved into a tie with Gold Wave Hall of Fame member Sarah Reed '08 for the most runs in the program's history with 153. With her first inning single, Case moved into sole possession of second place on the program's all-time hits list with her 227th, eight behind Reed. Megan Butts took the loss for the Chargers, just her eighth of the season, but third in the last five days to the Dolphins, after allowing six runs and nine hits over six and one-third innings.
