VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO CALIFORNIA (PA) AND FAIRMONT STATE ON FIRST DAY OF VULCAN INVITATIONAL

California, Pa. – The Le Moyne College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to 2016 NCAA Atlantic Region participants on the first day of the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcan Invitational at the Convocation Center. The Dolphins fell to the host Vulcans, 3-1, in their first match of the day and then were topped by Fairmont State University, 3-0.

The Vulcans, who were the fifth seed in the Atlantic regional last year and finished the season with 22 wins, opened the match by using a 12-2 run to take a 13-5 lead. After the teams split the next 12 points, the Dolphins used an 8-1 run to pull within 20-19. The Vulcans closed out the set with the final three points for a 25-21 win. The Dolphins rallied from a 22-20 deficit in the second set with five of the last six points to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-23 victory. California regained the lead in the match with a 25-16 victory in the third set after scoring six of the last seven points. The Vulcans closed out the match with a 27-25 win in the fourth set after the Dolphins fought off match point three times.

Junior right side Jessica Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) led the Dolphins in the setback with 16 kills, including six in the opening set and five in the second. Classmate Marguerite Dillon (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) registered her second double-double of the year with 12 kills and a career-best 22 digs. Senior setter Kendall Corcoran (Fort Salonga, N.Y./Kings Park) recorded her third double-double of the season with 41 assists and 10 digs, while adding four kills. Junior libero Mikayla Porr (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), the NE10 Libero of the Week, led all players in the match with 24 digs, including eight in the first set. Classmate Molly Gallagher (Schenectady, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) added a season-high 10 digs.

Rachel Priore led the Vulcans in the victory with 20 kills off a .370 hitting percentage, while adding five blocks. Tina Bellhy was the second Vulcan with double-digit kills with 12. Taylor Solo turned in a double-double with 44 assists and 15 digs. Marisa Fanelli led the team defensively with 20 digs, while Jensen Silbaugh and Ashley Leto recorded 13 and 11, respectively.

Fairmont State, which was the seventh seed in the Atlantic regional and won 21 matches, took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring the final four points of the first set for a 25-17 win. The Fighting Falcons doubled their lead with a 25-14 victory in the second set after using a 10-1 run in the middle of the set to erase a 10-9 deficit. Fairmont State posted a 25-18 win in the third set to close out the victory.

Miller and Dillon each registered double-doubles in the loss. Miller's first career double-double consisted of 11 kills and a career-high 11 digs. Dillon tallied 10 kills and 11 digs. Corcoran directed the offense with 29 assists, while Porr led the defense with 18 digs, the 17th of which marked the 1300th of her career.

Mackenzie Harrison led the Fighting Falcons in the win with a double-double of 17 kills and 14 digs. Emma Mobley tallied 13 kills on a .333 hitting percentage and posted four blocks. Jessica Furda registered a double-double with 32 assists and 14 digs, while Megan Clerico led the defense with 15 digs.

Le Moyne (3-3) continues play at the Vulcan Invitational on Saturday against Davis & Elkins College at 10:00 a.m. and Lake Erie College at 1:00 p.m.
