WOMEN’S BASKETBALL KNOCKS OFF 14TH-RANKED FLORIDA SOUTHERN, 74-67

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Junior guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 74-67 upset victory over 14th-ranked Florida Southern College on Friday afternoon on the first day of the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic at the McArthur Center.

Roberts finished the game with a career high-tying 28 points, while dishing out six assists for the second straight game. She gave the Dolphins the lead for good in the fourth quarter with nine straight points over 1:37. Senior guard Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) recorded 10 points, including eight in the second half, while grabbing four rebounds. Sophomore forward Madison Shetrom (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) posted career-highs of eight points and five rebounds, while freshman forward Emma Brinker (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) tallied eight points in her collegiate debut.

Camille Giardina, a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American and the Sunshine State Conference Tournament MVP last year, led the Moccasins with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Anja Fuchs-Robetin, the 2017-18 SSC Player of the Year and a WBCA Honorable Mention All-America selection, came off the bench to tally 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Jirah Ards also posted 16 points, while adding four assists. Julia Jenike was the fourth player in double figures with 11 points.

Roberts scored five of the game's first seven points in the opening 61 seconds as the Dolphins never trailed in the first quarter. After taking their third four-point lead of the period with 3:59 left on a lay-up by Shetrom, the Dolphins led 11-10 following 10 minutes of play after Giardina knocked down a three-pointer in the closing seconds.

After Brinker scored the first two points of the second quarter, Florida Southern responded with six straight points to take its first lead of the game. Following a three-pointer by Roberts to tie the score at 16, Jenike and Giardina buried three-pointers around a jumper by Brinker for a 22-18 advantage with 5:19 to go.

Le Moyne reversed the four-point margin with eight consecutive points over two minutes. Brinker, Shetrom, Purcell and freshman forward Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) each scored in the paint in the span.

The Mocs scored five straight points to regain the lead, but Shetrom converted two foul shots with 0.7 seconds left in the half to give the Dolphins a 28-27 lead at halftime.

The Dolphins scored the first five points of the third quarter to extend their lead to six, but the Mocs responded with seven consecutive points to take the lead back.

After the teams traded points over six and one-half minutes, Florida Southern put together a 7-0 run to take a 46-41 lead with 1:58 left in the quarter. Fuchs-Robetin had five of the points, while Giardina had the other two points.

Purcell scored five points in the final 67 seconds of the quarter to get the Dolphins within 48-46 after 30 minutes of action.
 
After the Dolphins opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, the Mocs regained the lead with four free throws with 8:44 to play.

Le Moyne responded with eight straight points and 13 of the next 15 to take the lead for good. Brinker scored the first two points and then Roberts tallied nine points over three possessions. Freshman guard Cameron Tooley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) capped the streak with two foul shots.

Fuchs-Robetin and Ards each scored to get the Mocs within 61-58 with 4:13 left, but Roberts answered by draining a three-pointer from the right wing with time running down on the shot clock.

Roberts made six straight free throws around a jumper by Ards to put the game away.

Le Moyne (3-1), which won its first non-conference game of the season for the fifth time in six seasons under head coach Gina Castelli, takes on the host Tritons on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
