Jessica Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) registered a double-double to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Southern New Hampshire University in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.
The Dolphins finish the season with a 15-9 overall record and a 7-7 mark in NE10 action. Depending on Saint Anselm's result against New Haven later tonight, the Dolphins will either finish in a four-way tie for eighth (Saint Anselm loss) or a three-way tie for ninth (Saint Anselm win).
In the back-and-forth opening set, which featured 17 ties and seven lead changes, the Dolphins scored four of the last five points for a 25-21 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match. The Dolphins jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second set. After Southern New Hampshire closed within 15-14, Le Moyne scored three straight points and 10 of the last 13 points for a 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead. The third set featured five ties, the last of which came at 16, before the Penmen rattled off four straight points and eight of the next 10 to take a 24-18 lead. The Dolphins scored five straight points to get within one, but committed an attack error for a 25-23 Southern New Hampshire. As was the case in the third set, the teams went back and forth in the fourth set until the score was tied at 16 again. The Penmen tallied four consecutive points again and nine of the last 11 for a 25-18 win. Southern New Hampshire took a four-point lead in the fifth set on three occasions and led 12-9 before the Dolphins mounted a comeback. Le Moyne scored four straight points to take the lead and after SNHU tied the score at 13, Miller landed kills on back-to-back points to give the Dolphins a 15-13 win in the set and a 3-2 win in the match.
Miller recorded her second straight double-double and her sixth of the season with 18 kills, including five kills in each of the second and third set, and a career-high 17 digs. With her second kill of the match, Miller passed Lindsey Fattey '06 for second place on the program's career kills chart with her 1,227th. Miller finishes her 107-match (tied for seventh-most) and 401-set (sixth-most) career with 1,243 kills, trailing only the 1,296 recorded by Gold Wave Hall of Fame member and current head coach
Lizzie Cheek '10. With her 12th kill of the match, she joined Sarah Brown '02 as the only two Dolphins to record at least 300 kills in three separate seasons. Junior middle blocker
Jacquelyne Ghindia (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) also landed 18 kills, including five in the second set, while posting four digs. Senior outside hitter
Marguerite Dillon (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) tallied 16 kills, including six in the fourth set, and five digs, while freshman outside hitter
Mary Talty (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) posted 13 kills, including four in the third set. Sophomore setter
Emily Yancone (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) registered her team-best 11th double-double of the season with a career-high 63 assists and 12 digs, while adding four service aces. The 63 assists are tied for the fourth-most by a Dolphin over the last 16 years and are the most since Kaylin Brainerd '10 had 64 at Merrimack on October 20, 2007. Yancone's 10.82 assists per set this season are the seventh-most in a season in the program's history and are the most in the 25-point scoring era (2008-present). Senior libero
Mikayla Porr (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) closed out her career with a match-high 25 digs, including 12 in the third set, while posting four service aces, including three in the second set. With her eighth dig of the match, Porr recorded the 2,100th of her 105-match (12th-most), 393-set (11th-most) career. Her service ace in the fourth set tied her with Kristina Bianchi '93 for the eighth-most in the program's history with 155, the highest total by a Dolphin since Cheek's 174 (5th-most).
Irem Bat led the Penmen in the loss with a double-double of 17 kills, including four in each of the first, second and fourth sets, and 20 digs, including eight in the third set. Amanda Costales also posted a double-double with 12 kills, including five in the third set, and 16 digs, seven of which came in the third set. Jessica Dillon facilitated the offense with 43 assists, while adding 13 digs for a double-double and five kills. Shaira Sanabria was the fourth Penmen to record double-figure digs with 11.
