Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman forward
Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 70-48 victory over Daemen College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.
Zimmerman, who had 10 points in the first half and 11 in the second, drained a career-best five three-pointers in the contest. Graduate student forward
Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) extended her streak of double-doubles at home to all four games this season with a career-high 19 points, including 13 in the first half, and 10 rebounds. Junior guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) posted 12 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Tiara Filbert was the only Wildcat to score in double figures with 18 points, including 13 in the first half, while grabbing seven rebounds and posting three steals.
The Dolphins, who are 8-2 for the first time since the 2000-01 season, opened the game with the first seven points and 12 of the first 14. Poitevien opened the scoring with a lay-up and Roberts followed with five consecutive points. After Daemen scored, Poitevien registered a conventional three-point play and then Zimmerman converted a lay-up.
After redshirt sophomore guard
Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) converted a jumper for an 18-6 lead with 4:02 left in the quarter, the Wildcats scored 10 of the last 12 points in the quarter to pull within 20-16. Filbert made a three-pointer and a lay-up to cut the deficit to seven. Following a basket by Poitevien, Ranaveya Richards converted a lay-up and then nailed a three-pointer as time expired in the quarter.
Following back-and-forth play over the opening four and one-half minutes of the second quarter, during which point Le Moyne's lead bounced between five and seven points, Daemen scored six of the next eight points to get within three. Richards made a jumper, Mickayla Ivy followed with a jumper of her own and then Richards made another jump shot to get the Wildcats within 30-27 with 4:18 left in the half.
Le Moyne scored the final eight points of the quarter to take control of the game. Zimmerman buried a three-pointer to start the streak, Roberts made a lay-up and freshman guard
Cameron Tooley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) ended the scoring in the half with a three-pointer with three seconds left.
The Dolphins scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to extend their run to 18 straight points and their lead to 21. Zimmerman bookended the run with three-pointers, while Poitevien and Tooley made lay-ups.
After Daemen got on the scoreboard in the quarter, the Dolphins scored nine of the next 11 points to take their largest lead of the game, 59-33, with 1:35 left in the quarter. Poitevien made a lay-up, junior forward
Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) converted a jumper, Zimmerman drained another three-pointer and freshman forward
Emma Brinker (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) capped the run with a lay-up five seconds after entering the game.
After Le Moyne's lead was either 24 or 26 over the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats scored six straight points to get within 20 with 2:51 left. Sarah Young had four of the points, while Erin Sinnott and Filbert each made a free throw.
Roberts drained a three-pointer and sophomore forward
Madison Shetrom (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) made a jumper to finish off Le Moyne's scoring, while Filbert hit a jumper with 1:33 to end the scoring in the contest.
Le Moyne (8-2) returns to action on Sunday, December 30 at home against Roberts Wesleyan College at 1:00 p.m.
