BASEBALL BLANKS QUEENS, 14-0, TO OPEN WEEKEND

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Junior righty Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) tossed six scoreless innings and junior catcher Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) had four hits and four RBI to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 14-0 victory over Queens College on Friday evening at The Ripken Experience's Ebbets Field, a replica of Brooklyn's famed similarly-named stadium.

The Dolphins scored the only runs they would need with a pair in the first inning on one hit. Senior right fielder/first baseman Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) drew a walk to start the game and came around to score on a double to right center by redshirt junior designated hitter Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo). Following a passed ball and a groundout, Taft scored on a wild pitch.

Le Moyne extended its lead to three in the third with a run on two hits. Cox led off with a double to left center and scored on a one-out single to center by Spinoso.

The Dolphins pushed across another run in the fifth on a pair of hits. Following a walk with one out, Cox raced home on a double to left center by Taft.

Le Moyne doubled its lead in the sixth with four runs on two hits and a Queens error. Redshirt freshman second baseman Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) led off with a single through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following a pair of walks around a pitching change to load the bases, Taft knocked in O'Mara by reaching on a fielder's choice. Spinoso followed with a double to left field to plate senior center fielder Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy). Junior first baseman Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) then reached on a throwing error by the second baseman, which allowed Taft and Spinoso to score.

The Dolphins tacked on one run in the seventh inning. O'Mara doubled to right with one out, moved to third on an infield single by sophomore third baseman Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and then scored as Jacques was caught stealing.

Le Moyne took a 10-0 lead with a run in the eighth inning. Spinoso walked with two outs and came around to score on a double to center by Place.

The Dolphins completed the game's scoring with four runs in the ninth inning. Freshman pinch-hitter Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) drew a walk to start the frame and advanced to third as freshman third baseman Casey Kretsch (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) reached second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Redshirt junior pinch-hitter Zachary Hughes (Troy, N.Y./Troy/Fulton-Montgomery C.C.) followed with a groundout to knock in Smith. Cox then singled to plate Kretsch. After a pitching change and a single to right by sophomore pinch-hitter Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Spinoso doubled to left center to drive in Cox and Tuey for the final runs of the contest.

Gray struck out a career-best eight batters over a career-high six innings to earn his first victory as a starter, while yielding seven hits. Sophomore righty Nathan Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) struck out a career-high three over the final three innings to earn his first collegiate save. Spinoso's four hits, two doubles and four RBI are all career highs. O'Mara finished with a career high-tying three hits and scored twice, while Cox scored a career-high four times to go along with two hits and three walks.

Dennis Buckstein took the loss for the Knights after giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits over five and one-third innings, while striking out seven.

Le Moyne (4-1), which has posted two shutouts in its first five games for the first time since the 1974 season, is back in action at The Ripken Experience on Saturday taking on Wilmington University at 10:30 a.m. and Dominican College at approximately 1:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Griffith Field, a replica of the stadium used by the Washington Senators from 1911 through 1961.
