SHIPPENSBURG SCORES LATE IN BOTH GAMES TO SWEEP BASEBALL

Shippensburg, Pa. – Shippensburg University scored the winning run in its final at-bat in both games en route to sweeping the Le Moyne College baseball team in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Fairchild Field. The Raiders won the opener, 4-3, and rallied for a 12-11 win in the nightcap.

Shippensburg got on the scoreboard first in the opener with two runs in the second inning. Left fielder Scout Knotts led off with a walk and moved to second on a one-out single to left by first baseman Tommy Baggett. Designated hitter Jack Goertzen then doubled to left center to drive in Knotts and Baggett.

The Dolphins took the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs on one hit and one Shippensburg error. Freshman catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) walked to open the inning and advanced to third as senior right fielder/first baseman Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) reached on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder. Redshirt junior designated hitter/first baseman Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) followed by blasting a three-run home run over the fence in left field.

The Raiders walked off with the win in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs. Baggett walked with one out and then advanced to second on an error as Goertzen reached on a fielder's choice. After pinch-hitter Ty Painter was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Baggett scored as second baseman Nick Spangler reached on a fielder's choice, which left runners at the corners with two outs. Shortstop Cash Gladfelter then singled to left center to drive in Matt Ketterer, who ran for Goertzen, with the winning run.

Freshman righty Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) took the loss after yielding four runs (two earned) over six and two-thirds innings, while striking out three. Taft's two hits in the contest were Le Moyne's only hits. Zack Sims earned the win for the Raiders after striking out seven over seven innings, while allowing just the two hits and three runs (two earned).

In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck first with a run in the first inning. Taft singled to left with one out, moved to second on a two-out walk and scored on a double to left by redshirt junior shortstop Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill).

Shippensburg evened the score in the bottom of the first as Spangler led off with a homer to left field.

Le Moyne responded in the top of the second with five runs on five hits. Sophomore third baseman Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) reached first on a wild pitch on strike three to start the inning and then moved to second on a single to the third baseman by redshirt junior catcher Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough). Cox followed with a single to left to knock in Jacques. Taft then launched his second three-run homer of the day to left field. Following an out and a pitching change, senior center fielder/pitcher JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) singled to center and then stole second with two outs. Sophomore left fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) followed with a single through the right side to drive in Pittman.

The Raiders got two runs back in the bottom of the third. Baggett doubled down the right field line with one out and came around to score on a single to center by Goertzen. Following an out, Spangler doubled to left to plate Goertzen.

The Dolphins extended their lead back to five with a pair of runs in the third. Jacques doubled to right to begin the frame and moved to third on a single by Buroni. After an out, Taft singled through the left side to drive in Jacques. Two batters later, Buroni scored as Pittman reached on a fielder's choice.

Walsh pushed Le Moyne's lead to six with a two-out solo homer down the left field line in the fifth inning.

Shippensburg began its comeback with two runs in the fifth. Center fielder Dalton Hoiles was hit by a pitch with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third on a single by Knotts and then scored on a groundout by catcher Drew Bene. Baggett then singled to center to drive in Knotts.

The Raiders evened the score at nine apiece in the bottom of the sixth. Third baseman Jacob Pollock reached on an error by the pitcher to start the frame, advanced to second on a single by Spangler and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following a pair of strikeouts, Hoiles reached on an error by the second baseman, which allowed Pollock to score. Knotts followed with a single to center to drive in Spangler, while Bene singled to the third baseman to plate Hoiles. Baggett then singled to left field to score Knotts.

Le Moyne regained the lead in the top of the seventh as Taft and junior designated hitter/first baseman Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) blasted back-to-back home runs to start the inning.

Shippensburg pushed across three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead. Hoiles led off with a homer to center to get the Raiders within one. Following a pitching change, a strikeout and a walk by Bene, Baggett homered to center to give the Raiders a 12-11 lead.

Pittman suffered the loss on the mound after yielding two runs over one inning of work, while striking out three. Taft and Jacques finished the contest with four hits each, while Taft added five RBI and scored three times. Buroni posted three hits, while Pittman, Walsh and Tuey each had two. Dalton Oates earned the win for the Raiders after tossing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Michael Hope retired all three batters he faced to collect his third save of the season.

Le Moyne (8-4) returns to the diamond on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) beginning at 12:00 p.m.
