Clermont, Fla. – Maddy Barone and Sarah Lavallee tossed shutouts to lead Southern New Hampshire to a doubleheader sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team on Friday morning at the National Training Center's Legends Way Ballfields. The Penmen won each game of the doubleheader, 3-0.
The Penmen took advantage of two Le Moyne errors in the third inning to score the only run they would need in the opener. Center fielder Katie Horiuchi reached on a wild pitch on strike three with one out and moved to second as first baseman Jordan Wade reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder. Shortstop Brittany Perdigao then reached on an error by the second baseman on a sacrifice bunt attempt, which allowed Horiuchi to come around and score.
Southern New Hampshire added a pair of runs on two hits in the fifth inning. Perdigao led off with a singled to third base, but was retired at second as third baseman Erin Garczynski reached on a fielder's choice. After Lavallee was hit by a pitch and replaced at first by pinch-runner Logan Filo-Loos, second baseman Shay Sauvageau singled to center to drive in Garczynski. Filo-Loos then scored as catcher Emily Critch fouled out to the first baseman.
Sophomore
Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) struck out a career-high nine batters in the loss, while yielding three runs (two earned) and seven hits. Barone registered 11 strikeouts and allowed only four hits to earn the win.
Southern New Hampshire opened the scoring in game two with a run in the first inning on three hits. Perdigao and Garczynski recorded consecutive singles with one out. Lavallee then singled to right center to knock in Perdigao.
The Penmen doubled their lead in the fifth in similar fashion to the first inning, but this time with two outs. Perdigao singled to left center, moved to second on a single to left by Garczynski and then scored on a single to center by Lavallee.
Southern New Hampshire completed the day's scoring with a run on two hits in the seventh inning. After Perdigao reached on a fielder's choice, Garczynski doubled to center with two outs to drive in Perdigao.
Senior righty
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) tallied eight strikeouts in suffering her second loss of the season, while yielding three runs and nine hits. Lavallee finished with more hits at the plate (2) than she allowed (1) as she improved to 5-0 on the season, while striking out four.
