Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshmen
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) and
Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) combined to toss a two-hit shutout as the 22nd-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team recorded a 3-0 victory over The College of Saint Rose on Monday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at the Onondaga Community College baseball complex.
After Vail left runners stranded at second and third in the top of the third, the Dolphins scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the inning. Redshirt freshman second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior right fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) followed with a single up the middle of his own to drive in O'Mara.
The Dolphins doubled their lead in the fourth inning via two Saint Rose errors and a hit. Junior catcher
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error as the second baseman tried to complete a double play. With the ball down the first base line, the catcher threw the ball into left field, which allowed Spinoso to get to third base. Following an out, sophomore left fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) singled to the second baseman, who fell down, allowing Spinoso to score.
Sophomore third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) led off the bottom of the seventh by blasting the 10th pitch of his at-bat over the 400-foot marker in center field for his third home run of the season.
Vail earned his second win of the season after striking out seven over five scoreless innings, while allowing just one hit. Byrns collected his first career save after striking out four over four innings, while giving just one hit. Cox and Tuey each had two of Le Moyne's eight hits. Greg Musk took the loss for the Golden Knights after yielding three runs (two earned) over seven innings, while striking out six.
Le Moyne (20-6, 6-0 NE10, 4-0 SW), which is 6-0 in conference action for the first time in its seven years in the NE10, is back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Assumption College beginning at 12:00 p.m.
