Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) drove in four runs to lead the 11th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team to a 9-2 victory over Bloomsburg University in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Litwhiler Field. The Huskies scored two runs in the last inning of the first game for an 11-10 win.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored the only runs they'd need in the first inning by scoring four times on four hits. After senior center fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) led off with a single to left, junior catcher/third baseman
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) blasted his second home run of the season to left center. Following a pop out, redshirt junior shortstop
Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and junior right fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) drew walks and sophomore third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) singled through the left side to load the bases. After an out, Buroni singled to center to drive in Walsh and DiNorcia.
Le Moyne added five runs in the second on three hits. Cox led off with a single to center, Spinoso walked and junior first baseman
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and force a pitching change. Walsh then walked on five pitches to force in Cox. Following an out, Spinoso scored from third on a wild pitch. Jacques followed with another single through the left side to knock in Place. Following a walk by redshirt freshman second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) to load the bases again, Buroni doubled to right field to plate Walsh and Jacques.
The Huskies broke through in the bottom of the third as second baseman Kyle OFier drilled the first pitch of the inning over the fence in left center.
Bloomsburg completed the game's scoring with a run in the bottom of the fifth. OFier singled through the left side with one out, moved to third on a double by designated hitter Colton Hooker and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by shortstop Nate Krizan.
Vail struck out five over the seven innings to earn his third win of the season, while yielding the two runs on just three hits. Cox, Jacques and Buroni each recorded two of Le Moyne's eight hits. Mark Bobko took the loss after allowing seven runs over one-plus innings.
In the opening game, the Dolphins struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning on four hits. Cox led off with a single to center and stole second with one out. After Place and Walsh singled to load the bases, DiNorcia singled to center to plate Cox. Jacques then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Place.
Bloomsburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Right fielder Cole Swiger led off with a double to right center and center fielder Austin Edgette followed with a single to the shortstop. Swiger then stole home as Edgette stole second. After Edgette stole third, he scored on a sac fly to right by left fielder Ben Newbert.
The Huskies scored six times in the bottom of the second before the first out was recorded. Krizan walked and Swiger followed with a double down the left field line. Edgette then singled through the right side to knock in Krizan and Swiger. Catcher Ryan Shiffer then singled to left and Newbert walked to load the bases and force a pitching change. On the 10th pitch of his at-bat, first baseman Andrew Holmes blasted a grand slam to right for an 8-2 lead.
Bloomsburg extended its lead with a run in the third inning. Edgette led off with a triple to right center and scored on a groundout by Shiffer.
The Dolphins started their comeback with a run in the fourth. Freshman designated hitter
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) was hit by a pitch with two outs and came around to score on a double to left center by Cox.
Le Moyne put up seven runs in the fifth on five hits and two Bloomsburg errors to take the lead. Walsh walked with one out, moved to third on a single to left center by DiNorcia and scored as Jacques reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Freshman left fielder
Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drove in DiNorcia with a single to right and moved to second on an error by the right fielder. O'Mara then doubled down the left field line to plate Jacques and Spinella and force a pitching change. After Smith walked, Cox doubled to right center to knock in O'Mara and get the Dolphins within a run. Spinoso followed with a double of his own to score Smith and Cox with the go-ahead run.
Bloomsburg walked off with the win by scoring twice in the seventh without getting the ball out of the infield. OFier walked to start the frame and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Jake Reed. Hooker was then hit by a pitch and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Christian Ciotti. After moving up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Krizan, Reed scored the tying run on a wild pitch, which allowed Ciotti to move to third. Swiger then singled to the third baseman to drive in Ciotti with the winning run.
Senior lefty
Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) took the loss after allowing two of the four batters he faced to score. Cox and DiNorcia each had three hits in the contest, while Cox knocked in two runs and scored twice. Trey Hinkle earned his fourth win of the year after retiring all three batters he faced in the top of the seventh.
Le Moyne (28-10-1), which completed its non-conference schedule with a 15-7 record, returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Dick Rockwell Field against Pace University. The first game is scheduled to get underway at approximately 1:00 p.m.
