Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team won four of the six singles matches to open Northeast-10 Conference play with a 4-3 victory over Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at the Skytop Tennis Courts.
With Division II adopting the seven-point scoring system this year, the Greyhounds captured the doubles point after winning two of the three matches in the doubles competition, which is played this year as three six-game pro set matches. At the third spot, Assumption's Valeria Sanchez and Ana Maria Escuerdo registered a 6-0 win over sophomore

Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and
Caroline St. Antoine (Longueuil, Québec/Cégep Édouard-Montpetit) were 6-0 winners at the second spot over Paige Benoit and Camille Latoni. Julia Chappell and Maria Monje captured the point for the Greyhounds with a 6-4 victory at the first position over senior
Tiffany Hamdan (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City/Roberts Wesleyan) and freshman
Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS).
In the singles competition, the teams split the first four matches to finish. At the first position, Chappell defeated Hamdan, 6-0, 6-2, and Sanchez was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at the fifth spot over freshman
Belen Wibmer (Maldonado, Uruguay/St. Joseph Mary College) to get the Greyhounds within one point of victory. At the second position, Oz earned her second victory of the year, 6-1, 6-0, over Benoit. Humala got the Dolphins within 3-2 with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Escuerdo at the sixth spot. St. Antoine evened the match at three apiece by posting a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 victory at the fourth position over Latoni. Nunez rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory at the third spot over Monje to clinch the match for the Dolphins.
Le Moyne (2-0, 1-0 NE10), which defeated the Greyhounds in the first round of the NE10 Championships last year, is back on the Skytop Tennis Courts on Sunday against Saint Anselm College at 10:00 a.m.
