Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) became the 15th player in the program's history to score 1,000 career points as the Le Moyne College women's basketball team registered a 69-51 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday evening at Ted Grant Court. The Dolphins, who received votes in both national polls this week and are ranked fourth in the D2SIDA East Region poll, extend their win streak to 11 games, the 11th-longest active streak in the nation.
Roberts, who finished the contest with 18 points, reached the milestone by converting the second of two free throw attempts at the 6:32 mark of the first quarter. Of the 15 players in the program's history to reach the milestone, she is just the sixth to do so during her junior season. By reaching the mark in her 73rd career game, she is the fourth-fastest Dolphin to reach 1,000 career points and the fastest since Jennifer Feher '04 scored her 1000th point in just her 68th game on December 30, 2002 against Bloomsburg.
Graduate student forward
Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) led three Dolphins in double figures with a game-high 19 points, including 11 in the second half, while grabbing a game-best seven rebounds. Freshman forward
Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) registered 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals.
Maty Diabate led the Skyhawks offensively with 12 points off the bench, including 10 in the second half, while pulling down a team-best five rebounds. Grace Carter tallied eight of her 11 points in the second half, while Gabrielle Reuter scored six of her 11 points in the first half.
After Carter hit a three-pointer with 6:06 left in the first half to give the Skyhawks a 7-4 lead, the Dolphins rattled off eight straight points over 1:49. Roberts drained a pair of three-pointers from the left wing around a lay-up by Poitevien, which was assisted by Roberts.
Stonehill, which defeated the Dolphins in the NE10 Championship semifinals last year, 58-55, answered with six straight points to take its final lead of the game. Three different Skyhawks scored in the paint in the span.
Redshirt sophomore guard
Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) gave the Dolphins the lead for good with a runner from the foul line with two seconds left in the quarter.
Following a three-pointer by Roberts and a lay-up by Diabate to start the second quarter, the Dolphins scored 13 consecutive points to blow the game open. Poitevien scored six of the first eight points, Zimmerman tallied five and freshman guard
Cameron Tooley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) converted a lay-up.
Reuter stopped the streak with a lay-up with 1:19 left, but Millea drilled a three-pointer just before the quarter ended to give the Dolphins a 33-17 lead at halftime.
Following five straight points by Stonehill in the first minute of the third quarter got the Skyhawks within 14, the Dolphins scored nine of the next 11 points for a 21-point advantage. Four Dolphins scored in the span, led by a three-pointer from Zimmerman.
Stonehill countered with an 8-2 run to get back within 15 (47-32) with 4:20 left. Diabate made a lay-up and then Carter drained a pair of three-pointers.
Le Moyne put together another 9-2 run over 2:41. Roberts, sophomore forward
Madison Shetrom (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and Millea each connected from long range in the stretch.
The Dolphins took a 58-36 lead into the fourth quarter after junior forward
Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) hit a pull-up jumper from the right wing as time expired.
After Roberts opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a lay-up at the 9:08 mark, the Skyhawks got a three-pointer from Isabella Santoro and a lay-up from Diabate to get within 19 with 7:14 to play.
The teams went back and forth over the final 6:56 as Le Moyne's lead bounced between 17 and 23 points the remainder of the game.
Le Moyne (15-2, 9-2 NE10), which has won 10 straight home games dating back to last season, is back in action on Saturday at Saint Anselm College at 1:00 p.m.
