Colchester, Vt. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team clinched a home match in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships with a 7-0 win over Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at the SMC Tennis Courts.
The Dolphins swept the doubles competition for the fourth time this season to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Sophomore
Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS) and freshman
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) posted the first win of the day, 6-0, at the first position over Abby Ramsay and Caroline Sumner. Juniors
Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and
Rebecca Peters (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn/Cayuga C.C.) were also 6-0 winners at the second spot over Annie Serkes and Ava Albis to clinch the point. Freshman
Marta Perez (Vigo, Spain/Northside Christian School (Fla.)) and junior
Camila Humala (Lima, Peru/Antonio Raimondi) defeated Abby Edelmann and Elly McKenna, 6-4, at the third position in their first match as a team.
Le Moyne dropped just five games in the singles competition for its fifth sweep of the season. Lilliegren earned her team-best 10th dual match win of the year by blanking Serkes at the third spot, 6-0, 6-0. Oz tied Lilliegren for the team lead in overall wins with her 13th, a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ramsay at the top position. Nunez clinched the victory for the Dolphins by recording a 6-0, 6-2 win, her 11th of the year, at the second spot over Brittany Katz. Peters improved to 5-2 in NE10 action with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Albis at the fourth position. Humala moved to 5-1 in dual matches with an 8-0 win at the sixth spot over Autumn Tamlyn. Perez picked up her 10th win of the season, 6-0, 6-1, over Sumner at the fifth position.
Le Moyne (10-2, 7-2 NE10), which is the first team in the conference to win 10 matches, concludes its NE10 schedule on Monday against Stonehill College at the Skytop Tennis Courts. The winner of the match will be the third seed in the NE10 Championships, which begins on Wednesday, October 23, while the other team will be the fourth seed.
