Weymouth, Mass. – Third-seeded Stonehill College won its second consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship with a 5-1 victory over fourth-seeded Le Moyne College on Sunday at The Weymouth Club.
At the post-match awards ceremony, sophomore
Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS) was the recipient of the Elite 24 Award, which honors the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the finals site of each NE10 Championship.
The Skyhawks, who captured their seventh NE10 Championship in program history, took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning twice in the doubles competition. At the third position, Steffi Antao and Caroline Ray registered a 6-3 win over freshman
Marta Perez (Vigo, Spain/Northside Christian School (Fla.)) and sophomore
Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd). Cristina Solorzano Valencia and Annelise Howick clinched the point for the Skyhawks with a 6-3 win of their own at the second spot over juniors
Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and
Rebecca Peters (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn/Cayuga C.C.). Oz and freshman
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) were leading Isabelle Porter and Samantha Ormesher at the first position, 5-4, when the point was secured.
After the first two matches to finish in the singles competition ended in straight sets, the next three to finish required three sets. Ormesher gave the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead in the match by defeating Fernandez at the sixth position, 6-0, 6-3. Nunez pulled the Dolphins within 2-1 by registering back-to-back 6-3 wins at the second spot over Porter. Antao put Stonehill back up by two with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Peters at the fourth position. Alexandra Vo, who was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player after going 2-0 over the three rounds, clinched the match for the Skyhawks with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win at the third spot over Lilliegren. Simultaneously, Emma Markaryan was a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 winner at the fifth position over Perez. Solorzano Valencia led Oz in the third set, 2-1, at first singles when the final point was clinched after they split the first two sets with Solorzano Valencia taking the first, 6-1, and Oz winning the second, 7-6 (7-5).
Le Moyne (13-4), which appeared in the NE10 Championship match for the first time in the program's history, returns to action in the Spring season on February 7 at Daemen College.
