Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) hit a game-winning home run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Le Moyne College baseball team a season-opening 6-5 win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Friday morning at Ting Park. The Crimson Hawks won the second game of the day, 3-1.
The Dolphins opened the season by scoring a run in each of the first two innings. With one out in the top of the first, Spinoso smacked his sixth career home run. In the second, junior third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) homered with two outs to doubles Le Moyne's lead.
IUP took the lead in the bottom of the third with four runs on three hits. Center fielder Chris Eisel walked with one out and came around to score on a triple by shortstop Colin Williams. Designated hitter Austin Mueller followed with a single to knock in Williams to even the score at two. Catcher Matt Swartz then homered to give the Crimson Hawks a 4-2 lead.
Le Moyne evened the score at four in the top of the fourth with two runs on three hits. Senior designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) led off with a single and moved to third on a double by sophomore right fielder
Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey). After a groundout, Jacques lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Place. Senior left fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) then singled to plate Wilson with the tying run.
The Crimson Hawks regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a run on two hits. Right fielder Tyler Adams tripled with one out and scored on a single by left fielder Luke Hollander.
The Dolphins scored the winning run in the top of the seventh. DiNorcia walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out, Spinoso homered to right field for a 6-5 lead.
Sophomore right-hander
Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) went the distance on the mound to earn the victory, while striking out six and yielding five runs and five hits. Colin Claus took the loss for the Crimson Hawks after allowing six runs and eight hits over six and two-thirds innings, while striking out eight.
In the nightcap, the Crimson Hawks took the lead in the third inning with a run on three hits. Hollander led off with a double and took third on a single by third baseman Austin Vigliotti. After two outs, Eisel doubled to plate Hollander.
IUP extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth with two runs on two hits. Right fielder Nick DiAndreth walked with two outs and advanced to third on a double by Eisel. Williams then singled to knock in DiAndreth and Eisel.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out home run by Jacques.
Le Moyne put the tying run on base with two outs in the sixth and seventh innings, but the next batter struck out both times.
Senior righty
Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) suffered the loss after yielding three runs and six hits over four and two-thirds innings, while striking out five. Jeff Allen struck out seven and allowed just one hit to earn his second win of the season. Brian Albert struck out the only batter he faced to earn a save.
Le Moyne (1-1) concludes its opening weekend on Saturday against East Stroudsburg University at approximately 4:15 p.m.
