Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Le Moyne College baseball rallied for victories over Dominican College and the University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at the Ripken Experience. The Dolphins overcame a nine-run deficit to defeat Dominican, 16-14, and trailed Bridgeport in the ninth inning before winning 10-9 in 10 innings.
Dominican started the day's scoring with four runs on four hits and one Le Moyne error in the first inning. Left fielder Kennee Torres singled and center fielder Elijah Tavarez doubled to start the game. Second baseman Justin Decker followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Torres. After first baseman Anthony Bartolomei reached on an error by the first baseman, which allowed Tavarez to score, designated hitter Brian Rotella homered to left field for a 4-0 lead.
Le Moyne cut its deficit in half in the second inning with two runs on four hits. Freshman designated hitter
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis HS) and freshman shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled with one out and then each advanced on a wild pitch. Junior third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) followed with a single to center to plate Syta and Nevins.
The Chargers pushed their lead to 5-2 in the third inning. B Rotella walked with one out and came around to score on a double to right by third baseman William Rotella.
The Dolphins closed within one with two runs on two hits and a Dominican error in the third inning. Senior left fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) led off with a single to the shortstop and advanced to second on a throwing error. After moving to third on a fly out, DiNorcia scored on a single to right by senior catcher/designated hitter
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington). After taking second on a groundout, Spinoso scored on a pair of passed balls.
Dominican blew the game open in the fifth inning with seven runs on five hits. After Brian Rotella singled to left field, William Rotella homered to left center. Following a fly out, Dominican loaded the bases on a hit batsman (catcher Nicholas Montone), single by Colon and a single up the middle by Torres. After a Le Moyne pitching change, Tavarez walked to force in Montone. Two batters later, Bartolomei hit a grand slam for a 12-4 advantage.
The Chargers pushed their lead to nine in the sixth with a run on two hits. Right fielder Max Chidsey singled to center with one out, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single to left by shortstop Joshua Colon.
Le Moyne answered with 10 runs on seven hits in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. After Nevins singled with one out, Jacques was hit by a pitch and junior center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) singled to load the bases, sophomore second baseman
Casey Kretsch (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) walked to force in Nevins. DiNorcia then singled to left to drive in Jacques and Tuey. Redshirt senior right fielder
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) then singled to left to knock in Kretsch and DiNorcia. Spinoso then got the Dolphins within 13-11 with a two-run homer to left to force a pitching change. Senior first baseman
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) and Syta walked to force another pitching change. Nevins greeted the new pitcher with a double down the right field line to knock in Place and Syta and tie the score. Jacques followed with a single up the middle to drive in Nevins with the go-ahead run.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 16-13 with two runs on two hits in the seventh inning. DiNorcia walked with one out, moved to second on a balk and scored on a double to left by Taft. Following a single by Spinoso, Taft scored on a balk.
Dominican plated one run in the ninth, but left the tying run at first base. Brian Rotella doubled down the left field line with two outs and scored on a single by William Rotella.
Freshman
John Geer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) earned the win out of the bullpen in his collegiate debut after striking out four over two and two-thirds innings. Sophomore
Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) earns the save by tossing the final two innings. Brandon Mology took the loss after allowing Le Moyne's go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
The Dolphins struck first against Bridgeport with two runs in the opening inning on one hit. DiNorcia walked, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on a groundout by Taft. Spinoso then smacked his fourth homer of the season to left field.
The Purple Knights answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as first baseman Vincent DeRubeis homered to left field.
Le Moyne regained its two-run lead with a run in the third. Sophomore catcher
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) walked to start the frame, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on double down the right field line by sophomore left fielder
Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).
Bridgeport took its first lead with four runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the third. Second baseman Ryan Donnelly walked and then moved to second on a balk. After third baseman Matt Rodriguez reached on error by the shortstop, DeRubeis singled to left to drive in Donnelly. Shortstop Conall Roberts followed with a double to left center to plate Rodriguez and DeRubeis. After a pair of outs, Roberts scored on a wild pitch.
The Dolphins took the lead back in the top of the fifth with four runs on three hits. DiNorcia singled and Spinella walked to start the frame. Taft then blasted a home run to right field for a 6-5 lead. Following a pitching change and an out, Nevins hit his first career home run to left field.
Le Moyne extended its lead to 8-5 in the top of the sixth. Redshirt sophomore second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) walked, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch.
Bridgeport scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at eight. Catcher Tyler Popp walked to open the inning and advanced to second on a single to left by center fielder Eamon Catherina. Following a pitching change, a pop out and an error to load the bases, Donnelly singled to left field to drive in Popp and Catherina. Three batters later, Donnelly scored on a wild pitch.
The Purple Knights went ahead 9-8 with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Rodriguez doubled to right center with one out and came around to score on a two-out single to center by Roberts.
Le Moyne evened the score in the ninth with a run on one hit. Spinella singled to right with one out and stole second before Taft and Spinoso walked to load the bases. Spinella then scored as Nevins reached on a fielder's choice.
After the Purple Knights went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras, the Dolphins plated the winning run in the top of the 10th. O'Mara singled to center with out and advanced to third on an error by the center fielder. After a groundout and a walk, O'Mara scored on a balk.
Bridgeport had its leadoff hitter double to start the 10th, but the next three hitters went down in order to end the game.
Freshman
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) earned the win in his collegiate debut after tossing the last three innings and striking out three, while yielding just one run. Spinella, Taft and Nevins each had two hits in the contest. Jonathan Brooks took the loss for the Purple Knights after giving up one run in one inning of work.
Le Moyne (3-2) closes out its weekend at the Ripken Experience complex on Sunday against LIU Post at 9:00 a.m.
