Clermont, Fla. – Corner outfielder/pitcher Courtney Greene scored twice in each game and struck out seven batters in the nightcap to lead Molloy College to a sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team in a doubleheader on Thursday morning at THE Spring Games at the Legends Way Ballfields. The Lions took the opener, 6-2, and recorded an 8-0, five-inning win in the second game.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the first game with a run in the first inning. Sophomore shortstop
Kaily LaForce (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) tripled to center to start the frame and came in to score on a wild pitch.
Molloy evened the score at one in the top of the third. Greene singled through the right side with two outs and came around to score on a double to right center by pitcher/shortstop Amanda King.
The Lions took the lead in the fourth with a run on two hits. Designated player Mikaela Tribby led off with a single through the right side and was replaced at first by pinch-runner/third baseman Marissa Nicoletti, who then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk by shortstop/third baseman Angelique Serrano and a single to left by first baseman Tara Byrnes, left fielder/right fielder Adriana Saab was hit by a pitch to force in Nicoletti.
Molloy doubled its lead in the fifth with a run on two hits. After Greene doubled to left center with one out, King also doubled to left center to plate Greene.
The Dolphins got the run back in the bottom of the fifth on one hit. After junior catcher
Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) was hit by a pitch with two outs, senior center fielder
Lauren Zazzaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) knocked her in with a double to right field.
The Lions added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Byrnes singled through the right side with one out and center fielder Alex Burns singled down the right field line with two outs. Second baseman Kaitlyn Snyder then blasted a home run to center for a 6-2 advantage.
Junior
Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) took the loss for the Dolphins after giving up two runs and six hits over four innings, while striking out three. King earned her second win of the season in the circle after striking out eight over seven innings, while yielding two runs and five hits.
In the nightcap, the Lions scored the only runs they would need in the first inning. Burns led off with a single through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Greene walked, Burns was retired at third as King reached on a fielder's choice. Following a walk to Tribby to load the bases, catcher Lauren Ramos singled to center to drive in Greene and King.
Molloy blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth with six runs on three hits and one Le Moyne error. Ramos walked with one out and Serrano followed with a bunt single. After a strikeout and Saab getting hit by a pitch to load the bases, Burns singled up the middle to knock in Ramos and Serrano. Following a walk by Snyder to load the bases again, Greene reached second on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Saab and Burns to score. King followed with a double to left center to plate Snyder and Greene with the final runs of the day.
Sophomore
Lauren Nichols (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) and four hits over three and two-thirds innings, while striking out three. Junior second baseman
Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) had two of Le Moyne's four hits in the contest. Greene struck out seven in her five scoreless innings of work, while yielding just four hits.
Le Moyne (7-6), which has dropped five of its last seven games after starting the season 5-1, is back in action on Friday against a pair of PSAC opponents. The Dolphins take on Slippery Rock University at 1:45 p.m. and Kutztown University at 4:00 p.m.
