Philadelphia, Pa. – Peyton Steinman made 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to lead seventh-seeded Saint Anselm College to its first-ever NCAA East Region championship with a 63-61 win over the fourth-seeded Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Monday night at Bobby Morgan Arena.
The Dolphins finish the season with a program-best record of 26-6, their first-ever NE10 regular season and tournament championships and first-ever berth in the regional championship game.
With the win, the Hawks advance to their first Elite Eight, which begins on March 26.
Junior guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led all players in the game with a career-high 35 points, including 21 in the second half and 12 in the fourth quarter, seven rebounds and four assists en route to being named the East Region Most Valuable Player. She is the first East Region MVP not from the regional championship winning team. Her 35 points are the third-most points in a game in the program's history and are the most since Jennifer Shea tied her own program record of 36 in 1989. She made 13 shots in the game, tied for the second-most in a game in the program's history, including six three-pointers. With her 28th point of the game, Roberts broke the program's single-season points record of 571 by Shea in 1988-89. Her third point of the game, Roberts passed Kathy Arcaro '87 for sixth on the career scoring chart with her 1272nd point.
Steinman and Shannon Ryan, who each earned spots on the NCAA East Region All-Tournament team, each scored 19 points in the victory, while Ryan grabbed seven rebounds.
