SOFTBALL RALLIES IN BOTH GAMES TO SWEEP PACE IN DOUBLEHEADER, 10-5, 5-4

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior first baseman Taylor Artley (York Haven, Pa./Red Land) drove in the go-ahead run in the first game and scored the winning run in the second game as the Le Moyne College softball rallied in both games to sweep Pace University in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 10-5, and topped the Setters in the nightcap, 5-4, in nine innings.

Pace got the day's scoring started with two runs in the first inning on three hits. Left fielder/center fielder Arielle Acosta led off with a double to left and moved to third on a double to right center by second baseman/designated player Emma Carruth. After an out and an error to load the bases, first baseman Annie Carberry singled to center to drive in Acosta and Carruth.

The Dolphins used two hits to even the score at two in the bottom of the first. Freshman center fielder Aubrie Williams (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk by senior right fielder Lauren Zazzaro (Southington, Conn./Southington), junior first baseman/third baseman/pitcher Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) singled up the middle to knock in Williams and moved Zazzaro to third. Sophomore shortstop Kaily LaForce (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Zazzaro.

The Setters regained the lead in the third with a run on two hits. Center fielder/right fielder Jillian Gartner led off with a single through the left side followed by a bunt single by designated player/catcher Zoie Iverson. After a fly out, shortstop/second baseman Niyah Brown lifted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Gartner.

Pace added a run in the fifth on two hits. Gartner and Iverson singled with one out and moved up on a passed ball. Carberry then grounded out to drive in Gartner.

After the Dolphins left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, the Setters tacked on a run in the sixth. Right fielder Raechelle Seil singled through the left side with one out and moved around to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Acosta followed with a two-out single up the middle to knock in Seil.

Le Moyne exploded for eight runs on eight hits in the bottom of the sixth. Senior left fielder Madison DeRita (Higganum, Conn./Mercy) led off with a single to right center and advanced to second a throwing error by the third baseman following the first out of the frame. Following a pop out, Williams reached on a bunt single in front of the plate and then stole second. Junior designated player/third baseman Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) then singled to the second baseman to drive in DeRita and Williams, while taking second on a throwing error by the second baseman. Zazzaro plated Nicolosi with the tying run with a single to right center. After Bellrose walked and LaForce singled up the middle to load the bases, Artley singled up the middle to knock in Zazzaro. DeRita then registered her second single of the inning to knock in Bellrose, while LaForce raced home on a missed catch by the second baseman. Freshman catcher Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) followed with a double to left field to drive in Artley and DeRita.

Pace loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Bellrose entered the circle and induced a line-drive double play to end the game.

Sophomore Skylar Rechner (Lacombe, Alberta/Lacombe Composite/Corning C.C.) earned her first win of the season after tossing two-thirds of an inning. Bellrose earned her first save of the year after retiring the only batter she faced. DeRita finished the game with three hits and two runs, while Williams, Nicolosi and Bellrose each had two hits. MacKenzie Garrick suffered the loss after yielding 10 runs and 13 hits over six innings, while striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Setters struck for three runs in the first inning. Carruth and Iverson walked around a single by Gartner to load the bases with one out. Carberry then drew a walk to force in Carruth. Shortstop Briana Ryan followed with a single up the middle to knock in Gartner, while Iverson scored on a single through the left side by Brown.

Le Moyne got one run back in the bottom of the first on a home run by Nicolosi.

The Dolphins cut their deficit in half in the second inning with a run on two hits and a Pace error. LaForce led off with a bunt single in front of the plate. After an out, sophomore catcher Olivia Littman (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) singled to center, while LaForce was able to come around to score on an error by the center fielder.

Le Moyne evened the score in the third inning on two hits. Nicolosi led off with a bunt single and took second on a passed ball. After moving to third on a groundout, Nicolosi scored on a single up the middle by LaForce.

The teams remained tied until the ninth inning. Third baseman Alexandra Cusumano led off the top of the frame with a single through the right side and moved to second on a sac bunt. After a fly out, Gartner singled to center to drive in Cusumano.

The Dolphins scored twice in the bottom of the frame to walk off with the win. DeRita doubled to center field with one out and Artley drew a walk with two outs. Junior second baseman Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) then lined a double to the wall in center to drive in DeRita and Artley.

Bellrose went the distance in the circle to earn her third straight win and seventh of the season, while striking out six and yielding four runs and seven hits. Nicolosi, LaForce and McManus each had three of Le Moyne's 16 hits, while DeRita, Littman and Artley each had two hits. Kate Dolinski took the loss for the Setters after allowing five runs and 16 hits over eight and two-thirds innings.

Le Moyne (12-10, 4-1 NE10, 4-1 SW), which swept the three-game season series with the Setters for the first time since 2013, returns to action on Saturday at Assumption College at 12:30 p.m.
