BASEBALL TOPS SHIPPENSBURG IN NIGHTCAP, 7-5, TO EARN SPLIT OF DOUBLEHEADER

Lynchburg, Va. – Senior catcher/third baseman Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) hit a tie-breaking home run in the fifth inning to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 7-5 win over Shippensburg in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Heritage High School. The Raiders won the opener, 15-1.

The Dolphins opened the scoring in the nightcap in the first inning as redshirt sophomore second baseman Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) blasted a leadoff home run on the fourth pitch of the game.

Shippensburg evened the score at one apiece on two hits in the bottom of the second. Third baseman Justin Darden led off the frame with a double to left center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Two batters later, left fielder Anthony Vavaroutsos doubled to left field to plate Darden.

Le Moyne regained the lead in the third with a run on two hits. Redshirt senior first baseman Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) led off with a single to left, stole second with two outs and scored on a single to left center by freshman shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham).

Shippensburg answered back with a run without a hit in the bottom of the frame. Center fielder Zack Zoller was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a one-out walk by first baseman Tommy Baggett, took third as designated hitter Jack Goertzen reached on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder and then scored as Darden reached on a fielder's choice.

The Dolphins took the lead for good with four runs on just one hit in the top of the fifth inning. O'Mara led off the frame with a walk and stole second. Two batters later, Spinoso launched his team-best fifth home run of the season over the fence in right field. Senior designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) and Nevins then drew walks. After a foul out and a pitching change, sophomore left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) walked to load the bases. Full-count walks by junior center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and sophomore catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) forced in freshman pinch-runner Richie Kuhar (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and Nevins with the team's fifth and sixth runs of the game.

Shippensburg got three runs back in the bottom of the inning on two hits. Baggett led off with a single to left and then Goertzen walked. After a fly out, right fielder Scout Knotts was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Vavaroutsos singled to center to drive in Baggett and Goertzen. Following a pitching change, Knotts scored on a sacrifice fly to right by catcher Chase Zurawski.

Le Moyne added an insurance run in the sixth. Spinoso was hit by a pitch with one out and came around to score on a double to left center by freshman pinch-hitter Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis).

Shippensburg got the potential tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the next three batters were all retired to end the game.

Senior righty Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) earned his second win of the season after tossing four and one-third innings, while striking out three and yielding five runs (four earned) and four hits. Sophomore Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) picked up his second save of the campaign by getting the last eight outs, including five via strikeout. Dalton Oates took the loss for the Raiders after allowing six runs on four hits and seven walks over four and two-thirds innings, while striking out seven.

Shippensburg took advantage of a Le Moyne error in the first inning of the opener to score the only runs needed. Designated hitter Logan Williamson walked to start the inning and then Darden singled with two outs. Knotts then struck out, but reached first on a throwing error by the catcher, which allowed Williamson to score. Vavaroutsos followed with a home run to left field for a 4-0 lead.

The Raiders scored six times on six hits in the third inning. Baggett and Goertzen started the frame with back-to-back home runs. After a groundout, Knotts singled to left, Vavaroutsos singled to the shortstop and shortstop Jacob Pollock walked to load the bases. Second baseman Ty Painter followed with a single to the third baseman to drive in Knott. Zoller then lifted a sac fly to right to plate Vavaroutsos. Williamson followed with a double to right center to drive in Pollock and Painter.

Shippensburg added three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Goertzen led off with a double and then Darden singled to left. After a strikeout, Vavaroutsos homered to right field.

Le Moyne got on the scoreboard with a run on two hits in the fifth inning. Sophomore right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) doubled to right with one out and came around to score on a single by Tuey.

The Raiders finished off the game's scoring with two runs in the fifth on two hits and a Le Moyne error. Zoller reached second on an error by the left fielder to start the inning. Williamson then doubled to left center to knock in Zoller. After an out, Goertzen singled to center to plate Williamson.

Sophomore righty Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) dropped to 1-2 on the season after giving up 13 runs (nine earned) over four innings, while striking out five. Zack Sims earned the win after striking out eight over six innings.

Le Moyne (5-5) concludes it four-game series on Sunday with another doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
