Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) hit a go-ahead two-run single in the third inning as the Le Moyne College baseball team won its home opener, 4-3, over The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Dick Rockwell Field.
Le Moyne started the game's scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and junior third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) drew walks to open the frame. After an out and a walk by sophomore designated hitter
Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), Smith scored on a ground ball by senior left fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day).
Saint Rose took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. Second baseman Patrick LaDouce walked with one out, stole second, moved to third on a single and scored on a single to left center by designated hitter Kenny Fils-Aime. Shortstop Andrew Pedone then scored as first baseman Nicolas Teitter grounded out.
The Dolphins regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Senior catcher
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) walked with one out, moved to second on a single down the third base line by redshirt senior first baseman
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) and came around to score on a double down the right field line by Smith. Following an out, Tuey lined a single into center to drive in Taft and Smith.
The Golden Knights pulled within one in the fifth, but were unable to plate the tying run. Pedone walked to start the frame, stole the second and advanced to third on a single by Teitter. Catcher Jon Montesanti then lifted a sacrifice fly to right center to knock in Pedone and move Teitter to third. The next batter struck out to end the scoring threat.
Sophomore
Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) earned his second win of the season after tossing four innings out of the bullpen, while striking out five and yielding one run and three hits. Freshman
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) picked up his fourth save of the season after retiring all six batters he faced, including two via strikes. Cameron Flynn took the loss after allowing four runs and four hits over four innings, while striking out five.
Le Moyne (14-17, 5-6 NE10, 2-3 SW) hosts Southern Connecticut State University in a Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
