Easton, Mass. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team clinched a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships and snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-1 win over Stonehill College on Wednesday afternoon in NE10 action at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts.
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead on the day by winning two of the three matches in the doubles competition. Seniors
Andres Hernandez (Monterrey, Mexico/Laurel Springs/Texas Rio Grande Valley) and
Xavier Graells (Castellar del Vallès, Spain/IES Castellar/Harford Community College) were victorious at the third position, 6-1, over Vincent Huynh and Luke Mendoza for the first win of the match. At the top spot, sophomore
Tom Jarry (Paris, France/CNED Toulouse/Emmanuel) and junior
Philip Blythe (Edinburgh, Scotland/Merchiston) clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Trent Newman and Samuel Miller. Russell White and Juan Riano Rojas prevented the sweep by edging senior
Tyler Underwood (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) and freshman
Gerardo Wibmer (Maldonado, Uruguay/Apostille School) at the second position, 7-6 (7-1).
Le Moyne won five of the six matches in the singles competition. Blythe improved to 11-4 at second singles with back-to-back 6-2 wins over Miller. Jarry recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win at the first position over Newman to improve to 13-4 on the year. Riano Rojas got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the fifth spot over sophomore
Christian Erickson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). Graells clinched the match for the Dolphins with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win at the fourth position over Huynh. Graduate student
Sven Gopfrich (Erlangen, Germany/Emmy-Noether-Gymnasium Erlangen/Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg) defeated Aaron Diamond at the sixth spot, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Hernandez closed out the match by recording a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win over White.
Le Moyne (10-8, 5-3 NE10) returns home for its final non-conference match of the year on Wednesday against Roberts Wesleyan College at 3:00 p.m.
