Goffstown, N.H. – Top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University registered a 4-2 win over the fourth-seeded Le Moyne College men's tennis team in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships semifinals on Thursday afternoon at the YMCA Allard Center.
The Penmen were victorious at the second and third spots in the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Miguel Marreiros and Fernando Torres earned the first win, 6-1, at the second spot over senior
Tyler Underwood (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) and freshman
Gerardo Wibmer (Maldonado, Uruguay/Apostille School). Ricardo Marreiros and Tiago Fernandes clinched the point with a 6-2 win over seniors
Andres Hernandez (Monterrey, Mexico/Laurel Springs/Texas Rio Grande Valley) and
Xavier Graells (Castellar del Vallès, Spain/IES Castellar/Harford Community College) at the third position.
Southern New Hampshire, which has won 45 straight matches against NE10 foes, won three of the first five matches to finish in the singles competition to clinch the victory. Sophomore
Tom Jarry (Paris, France/CNED Toulouse/Emmanuel) evened the match at one win apiece with back-to-back scores of 6-4 at the first position over Tiago Fernandes, the NE10 Player of the Year each of the last three years. The loss was Fernandes' first against an NE10 opponent in singles action (including postseason and ITA East Regional Championship tournaments) after winning his first 45 such matches. Bas Van Biezen gave the lead back to the Penmen by edging Graells at the fourth position, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). NE10 Rookie of the Year Emmanuel Vacalares extended SNHU's lead to two by rallying for a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2 victory at the third spot over Hernandez. Junior
Philip Blythe (Edinburgh, Scotland/Merchiston) kept the Dolphins alive in the match by rallying for a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Willem van Biezen at the second position. Miguel Marreiros clinched the victory for the Penmen by winning a tiebreaker in the third set, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), over sophomore
Christian Erickson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) at the fifth spot.
Le Moyne finishes the season at 13-9 after advancing to the NE10 semifinals for the second straight year.
