Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team fell to seventh-ranked Adelphi University, 6-3, in the regular season finale for both teams on Friday evening in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Onondaga Community College.
The Dolphins finish the regular season with a 10-8 record in divisional play and are guaranteed at least the third seed in next week's NE10 Conference Championships. The Dolphins can claim the second seed if American International College (8-8) sweeps Pace University (10-8) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. In that scenario, the Dolphins would host AIC in a first round game on Tuesday. If Pace wins at least one of the games, the Setters will be the second seed and host the Dolphins in a first round game on Tuesday.
The Panthers opened the game's scoring with two runs in the second inning without getting a hit. With two outs, second baseman Jordan Milo, catcher Jack Ryan and right fielder Jonathan Iadevaia drew consecutive walks on 14 pitches to load the bases. Shortstop Brett Malm then drew a walk on eight pitches to force in Milo. Left fielder Thomas Cicileo was hit by the next pitch to force in Ryan.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a run. Center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) drew a four-pitch walk to start the inning. Following a pair of outs, Tuey stole second and came around to score on a single up the middle by freshman shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham).
Le Moyne tied the score at two in the fourth with a pair of hits. Redshirt senior first baseman
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) led off with a single down the left field and moved to third on a one-out single down the right field line by sophomore right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern). Taft then scored as junior third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) reached on a fielder's choice down the right field line.
Adelphi regained the lead with three runs in the fifth on four hits. Cicileo and first baseman Thomas Colombo opened the frame with back-to-back singles to center. After a foul out, third baseman Lucas Terwilliger singled through the left side to knock in Cicileo. Following a groundout, Milo tripled to right center to drive in Colombo and Terwilliger.
The Panthers tacked on a run in the sixth. Malm led off with his nation-best 24th double of the season, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Cicileo.
Le Moyne got within three with a run in the seventh. Jacques, Tuey and freshman second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) drew consecutive walks to start the frame. Following a pair of outs, Nevins greeted the third pitcher of the inning with a single to left field to drive in Tuey.
The Dolphins brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not push across another run.
Sophomore southpaw
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) took the loss after allowing six runs over six innings, while striking out three. Daniel Taggart improved to 5-0 on the season after striking out four over six innings, while allowing two runs. Tom Ambrosino earned his second save of the series and his nation-best 14th of the year after recording the final five outs, including three via strikes.
