Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Le Moyne College baseball team an 8-7 11-inning come-from-behind win over Mansfield University on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins recorded a 10-6 win over Frostburg State University in their second game of the day.
Mansfield opened the game's scoring with a run in the first inning on a pair of hits. After he tripled to left center with one out, shortstop Josh Kulina scored on a single to left by designated hitter Ben Osborne.
The Dolphins evened the score at one apiece in the bottom of the first with one hit. Redshirt junior second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) led off with a single to the shortstop, moved to second on a walk, stole third with one out and raced home on a sacrifice fly to right field by junior third baseman
Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.).
The Mountaineers regained the lead with three runs on three hits and two Le Moyne errors in the second inning. Second baseman Brady Mengel led off with a single to left and moved to second as third baseman Jake Cotton reached on an error by the shortstop. Following an out and a walk by center fielder Josh Farina to load the bases, left fielder Brittain Shander doubled to right center to drive in Mengel and Cotton, while Farina was thrown out at home. After Kulina reached on an error by the shortstop, Osborne singled to left to drive in Shander.
Mansfield pushed its lead to 5-1 with a run in the fourth inning. Right fielder/center fielder Jake Haas tripled to right center to open the frame and scored on a two-out single to left by Kulina.
The Mounties finished off their scoring with two runs in the fifth. After first baseman Dom Lopez reached on a fielder's choice, Mengel homered to left field for a 7-1 lead.
The Dolphins started their comeback with three runs on three hits and one Mansfield error in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) singled with one out, moved to second on a walk by senior center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and took third as Jacques was hit by a pitch. Junior pinch-hitter
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) then singled to the third baseman to drive in Smith. Tuey then raced home on a wild pitch. Junior catcher
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) followed with a single to center to knock in Jacques.
Le Moyne scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on three hits to close within one. Sophomore shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and sophomore first baseman
Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) opened the frame with singles. Miller then reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases. Following a pitching change and two outs, Jacques singled to left field to plate Nevins and Roden.
The Dolphins forced extra innings with a run in the ninth on one hit and one Mansfield error. Smith led off with a single to right field and was replaced at first by freshman pinch-runner
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame). After an out and a walk by Jacques, Brush scored on an error by the first baseman on the backend of a double-play attempt.
Le Moyne walked off with the win in the bottom of the 11th inning. Junior right fielder
Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) walked with one out, moved to second as Tuey was hit by a pitch and raced around to score on a single by Jacques.
Junior righty
Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) earned the win out of the bullpen after striking out four over two innings. Nevins registered three of Le Moyne's 12 hits, while O'Mara, Smith and Jacques each had two hits. Todd Erney took the loss for the Mountaineers after yielding two runs (one earned) over two and one-third innings.
Le Moyne opened the scoring against Frostburg State with a run in the second inning. Hansen led off with a double to left field and came around to score on a single to center by Roden.
Frostburg State scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. First baseman Ryan Roell was hit by a pitch to open the inning, moved to second on a single by right fielder Bryce Jackson and took third on a walk by pitcher/designated hitter/second baseman AJ Campbell. Third baseman DJ Coleman then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Roell. After a walk to load the bases again, catcher Hayden McLaughlin singled to left to drive in Jackson.
Le Moyne regained the lead in the fifth with three runs on one hit and two Frostburg State errors. Smith reached second on an error by the right fielder with one out and then scored as Hansen reached on an error by the left fielder. Roden then doubled to center to knock in Hansen. Following a pair of walks around a pitching change, Roden scored on a groundout by sophomore catcher
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis).
The Dolphins added three more runs in the sixth inning. Nevins walked and Smith singled to open the frame. After an out and a walk by Roden to load the bases, Smith scored on a passed ball. Jacques then doubled to left field to drive in Hansen and Roden.
Frostburg State scored twice in the seventh to cut its deficit back to three. Pinch-hitter/left fielder Worthy Hollister walked with one out and stole second with two outs. After a Le Moyne pitching change, shortstop Nick Benitez singled to center to drive in Hollister. Roell then doubled to left to knock in Benitez.
The Dolphins got one run back in the bottom of the seventh. O'Mara reached third on a throwing error by the third baseman to start the inning. Nevins then singled to right to plate O'Mara.
Frostburg State answered with a run in the eighth. Campbell singled and Coleman walked to started the frame. After an out and a hit batsman, Hollister knocked in Campbell with a groundout.
Le Moyne finished off its scoring with two runs in the eighth on three hits. Spinella walked with one out, stole second and scored on a double to right by Syta. Two batters later, O'Mara singled to left to drive in Syta.
Frostburg State completed the game's scoring with a run on two hits in the ninth. Benitez led off with a double to right, took third on a single by Roell and scored on a groundout by Campbell.
Freshman
Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) earned his first collegiate victory after striking out five over six and two-thirds innings, while yielding three runs and four hits. O'Mara, Nevins and Roden each had two of Le Moyne's 10 hits. Campbell took the loss after allowing four runs over four and one-third innings, while striking out two.
Le Moyne (2-1) concludes play at the USA Baseball Training Complex on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. against East Stroudsburg University.
