Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Senior catcher
Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) scored four runs and recorded RBI to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 19-8 victory over Seton Hill University on Saturday on the second day of the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament. The Dolphins fell to 17th-ranked Saint Anselm College, 11-2, in their second game of the day.
Seton Hill opened the game's scoring with three runs in the first inning. Third baseman Alexis Vargas opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on a groundout. After a walk by shortstop Christiana Skrabak and catcher Chelsea Rohan was hit by a pitch to load the bases, designated player Laken Ryen singled to knock in Vargas. First baseman Morgan Toal then singled to score Skrabak and Rohan.
The Dolphins cut into their deficit with a run in the top of the third. Nicolosi drew a walk to lead off the inning and moved to third on a single by senior second baseman
Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston). Senior third baseman/pitcher
Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Nicolosi.
Le Moyne took the lead with seven runs in the fourth. Sophomore right fielder
Victoria Catalano (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led off with her first career home run. Junior shortstop
Kaily LaForce (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) followed with a single, freshman pitcher
Mckenzie Bergdoll (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) then reached on an error and freshman left fielder
Jillian Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass./Tantasqua Regional) followed with a single to load the bases. LaForce then scored on a wild pitch to tie the score. After pinch-hitter
Olivia Littman (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) walked to load the bases again, Nicolosi singled to drive in Bergdoll and Dunn. After an out and walks by Bellrose and senior first baseman
Taylor Artley (York Haven, Pa./Red Land) to load the bases again, Catalano reached on an error, which allowed Nicolosi to score. LaForce then singled to knock in Bellrose and Artley.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 12-3 with four runs in the fifth. Freshman center fielder
Dominique Russo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Nicolosi opened the frame with singles and then McManus walked to load the bases. Bellrose then smacked a grand slam.
The Griffins stayed alive in the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch-hitter Samantha Estupinian led off with a single, but was retired at second as Toal reached on a fielder's choice. After a groundout and a single by left fielder Natalia Greco, center fielder Ashley Boehm homered to make it 12-6.
Seton Hill plated a pair of runs in the sixth. Rohan led off with a single, Estupinian drew a walk and Toal then singled to load the bases. Right fielder Madison Hans then grounded out to drive in Rohan. Greco followed with a single to plate Estupinian, while Toal was thrown out at home.
Le Moyne recorded its second seven-run inning of the game in the seventh. After McManus led off with a walk and stole second, junior pitcher
Skylar Rechner (Lacombe, Alberta/Lacombe Composite/Corning C.C.) blasted her first career home run. Artley followed with a single, Catalano walked and third baseman
Makenzie Konik (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) walked to load the bases. Dunn then singled to drive in Artley. Following an out, Nicolosi singled to plate Konik and Dunn. McManus then reached on an error by the right fielder, which allowed Russo to score. Nicolosi then stole home for the game's final run.
Bergdoll earned the win in the circle after striking out six over four innings, while yielding three runs and four hits. Nicolosi and Dunn each finished with three hits, while Rechner and LaForce each had two. Skyla Greco suffered the loss for the Griffins after allowing 13 runs (10 earned) over six innings.
Saint Anselm started the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Left fielder Maggie Murphy drew a walk with one out and then stole second. After an out, designated player Kat Stackrow reached on an error by the third baseman. Shortstop Bre Klaiber then doubled to left to drive in Murphy and Stackrow.
The Hawks added a run in the second inning. First baseman Abbie Murrell led off with a single to left and moved to second on a one-out walk by catcher Bailey Cain. After a fly out, Murphy singled to left to knock in Murrell.
Saint Anselm scored five runs in the third inning. Klaiber drew a walk to open the frame and moved to second on a two-out single by center fielder Erin Thompson. Cain followed with a single to left to drive in Klaiber and force a pitching change. After right fielder Shannon Colson walked to load the bases, Murphy smacked a grand slam.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. After Nicolosi was hit by a pitch with two outs, McManus hit her eighth career home run.
The Hawks finished off the game's scoring with three runs in the fifth. After Thompson singled and Cain doubled to start the inning, Colson singled to right center to plate Thompson. Following a pitching change and an out, pinch-hitter/third baseman Maddi Leite singled to left field to drive in Cain and Colson.
Rechner took the loss after yielding six runs (four earned) over two and two-thirds innings, while striking out four. McKenna Smith earned the win for the Hawks after striking out five over the final two and one-third innings.
Le Moyne (2-2) wraps up play at the Snowbird Freeze Out on Sunday against Shippensburg University at 10:00 a.m.
