WILSON DRIVES IN SEVEN AS BASEBALL TOPS BRIDGEPORT, 15-1

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Junior right fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) blasted two home runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 15-1 victory over the University of Bridgeport on Saturday at The Ripken Experience.

The Dolphins started the scoring with a run in the first inning on a pair of hits. Senior center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) led off the game with a single to right field, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a single to right by sophomore first baseman Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill).

Le Moyne scored the eventual game-winning run in the third. Tuey led off the frame with a triple down the right field line and scampered home on a sacrifice fly to right by sophomore shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham).

The Dolphins took advantage of a Bridgeport error to score a run in the fourth. Senior third baseman/left fielder Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) walked to start the inning, but was retired at second as freshman left fielder/center fielder Sean O'Connor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) reached on a fielder's choice. Wilson then singled to the left fielder, who misplayed the ball, allowing O'Connor to come all the way around to score.

Le Moyne exploded for six runs in the fifth to take a 9-0 lead. Nevins and Roden walked with one out to force a pitching change. After junior designated hitter Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./LaSalle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) singled to the shortstop to load the bases, Jacques walked to force in Nevins. Following a strikeout, Wilson blasted a grand slam to right field. Sophomore second baseman/shortstop Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) was hit by a pitch, stole second and came around to score on a double to left center by junior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain).

The Dolphins reached double digits with a run in the seventh on two hits. Wilson doubled to left field with two outs and scored on a single to left by Carroll.

Le Moyne tacked on five runs in the eighth on three hits. Tuey led off with a single to first base and Nevins followed with a walk. After a strikeout, sophomore pinch-hitter Richie Kuhar (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jacques then singled to center to drive in Tuey. Nevins then scored as O'Connor reached on a fielder's choice. Wilson followed with a three-run homer to left center to complete Le Moyne's scoring in the contest. Wilson is the first Dolphin to hit a grand slam and a three-run home run in the same game in over 21 years.

Bridgeport got into the scoring column with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Jake Russo singled to center with one out and moved to third on a double by pinch-hitter Tyler Popp. Pinch-hitter Stephen Giambra followed with a single to center to knock in Russo.

Freshman righty Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) improved to 2-0 on the year after striking out nine over seven scoreless innings, while scattering six hits and walking just one. Wilson finished the game with four hits, seven RBI and three runs scored, while Tuey had three hits and three runs and Hansen and Fureno each had two hits. Jason Burger took the loss for the Purple Knights after allowing five runs (four earned) over four and one-third innings, while striking out eight.
