Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) recorded a double-double to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 58-48 come-from-behind victory over The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Corcoran's third double-double of the season consisted of a career-best 17 points, including nine in the third quarter, and 10 rebounds, including four in the fourth quarter. Redshirt junior guard
Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) tallied a game-high 19 points, including six in the fourth quarter. Senior guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), who failed to make a field goal for just the second time in her 109-game career (tied for the sixth-most games in program history) and for the first time in 97 games (at Queens, 12/30/16), dished out a game-best nine assists and moved into a three-way tie for ninth place in NE10 history with 584 career assists.
Leah Dollard led the Golden Knights in the loss with 12 points, including eight in the first quarter. Nina Fedullo and Becca Townes each scored 10 points, while Fedullo pulled down seven rebounds.
The teams split the first 12 points of the game before alternating the lead. After Corcoran gave the Dolphins an 8-6 lead, Fedullo made a three-pointer and Townes converted a lay-up for a three-point edge.
Le Moyne countered with four points before Saint Rose answered with four points to take a three-point lead again. After a basket by the Dolphins, Dollard closed out the quarter's scoring with a shot in the paint to put the Golden Knights up 17-14 after one quarter.
After Dollard started the scoring in the second quarter, the teams traded 5-0 spurts and then alternated three-pointers as Saint Rose took its second and third five-point leads of the game.
Sophomore forward
Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) hit a three-pointer with 1:36 left to get the Dolphins within 27-25, but Fedullo scored in the paint to give Saint Rose a 29-25 lead at halftime.
Following baskets by Millea and Dollard to start the third quarter, the Dolphins scored seven straight points and 14 of the last 17 points of the period. Corcoran made a jumper, Zimmerman scored in transition and then Millea drilled a three-pointer.
Saint Rose knotted the score at 34 on a three-pointer by Fedullo with 4:14 left, but Corcoran made a lay-up, a right corner three-pointer and two free throws for a 41-34 lead after three quarters of play.
Le Moyne scored five of the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take its first double-digit lead of the game. Corcoran made a pair of shots around a basket by Saint Rose before Zimmerman converted a free throw.
After the Golden Knights got within eight on two occasions, Millea drilled a pair of three-pointers around a Saint Rose basket for a game-best 12-point lead.
The Golden Knights scored five of the next six points to get within 56-48 with 29 seconds left, but Roberts closed out the game's scoring with two free throw, her only points of the game, with 27 ticks left.
Le Moyne (14-7, 10-4 NE10), which swept the season series with the Golden Knights for the third time in four years, returns home to host the University of New Haven on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
