FOURTH-QUARTER RALLY FALLS SHORT AS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IS EDGED BY #25 STONEHILL, 55-53, IN NE10 SEMIFINALS

Easton, Mass. – Gabrielle Reuter keyed an 11-0 run in the third quarter to lead 25th-ranked Stonehill College to a 55-53 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship semifinals on Thursday evening at Merkert Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Dolphins will now have to wait until Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. for the announcement of the NCAA Division II championship field to see if their season will continue. In this week's NCAA East Region rankings, the Dolphins jumped three spots and were ranked fifth.

Redshirt junior guard Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) led three Dolphins in double digits with 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter. She now has 67 three-pointers on the season, which ties McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) from two years ago for the fourth-most in a season in the program's history. Roberts scored seven of her 12 points in the fourth quarter, while adding three assists. With the game played, Roberts broke the program's games played record with the 116th of her career. Senior forward Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) recorded 11 points, including nine in the second half, and nine rebounds in her 112th career game, which ties Maggie Brown '16 for the fourth-most in the program's history.

Reuter finished with a game-high 16 points, including eight total in the third quarter, to go along with six rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Kayla Raymond turned in 11 points, including seven in the first quarter, and six rebounds.

The teams traded baskets to start the game before Raymond and Reuter made lay-ups for a 9-4 lead.

Roberts and Millea scored around another Reuter lay-up to get the Dolphins within 11-9 after one quarter of play.

After Megan Hill started the scoring in the second quarter, the Dolphins scored five straight points and 11 of the next 13 to take their largest lead of the game. Sophomore forward Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) started the run with a lay-up and then Millea drilled a three-pointer. Following a Stonehill basket, freshman guard Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) recorded a conventional three-point play and Zimmerman connected on a three-pointer from the left wing to give the Dolphins a 20-15 lead with 1:24 remaining in the half.

The Skyhawks, who defeated the Dolphins by three points in the NE10 semifinals two years ago, scored the final four points of the half to pull within 20-19 at halftime. Kelsey Shaw made two free throws with 35 seconds left and then Jennifer Worden made a jumper with four seconds to go.

After the teams split the first 14 points of the third quarter, including trading the lead on a pair of occasions in the span, the Skyhawks got baskets in the paint from Emily Bramanti and Reuter to take the lead for good.

Following jumpers by Millea and Roberts around a Stonehill lay-up to get the Dolphins within 32-31 with 3:00 left, the Skyhawks rattled off the final 11 points of the quarter. Reuter made three shots around two free throws by Worden for a nine-point lead and then Shaw hit a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key as the clock expired to give Stonehill a 43-31 advantage.

After Roberts started the scoring in the fourth quarter with two free throws, Hill and Raymond scored in the paint to give the Skyhawks their largest lead of the game, 47-33, with 8:17 to go.

The Dolphins started their comeback with eight straight points. Sophomore guard Cameron Tooley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) drilled a three-pointer from the right wing, Zimmerman converted a lay-up and then Roberts buried a three-pointer.

The Skyhawks scored four points around a three-pointer by Millea to push their lead back to seven with 3:24 left, but Millea followed with another three-pointer and Corcoran made a jumper to get the Dolphins within 51-49 with 2:27 to play.

Reuter and Corcoran traded lay-ups in a span of a minute and then Shaw and Roberts traded baskets in the paint to make it 55-53 with 38 seconds left.

Stonehill committed a turnover with 13 seconds remaining to give the ball back to the Dolphins, who then called their final timeout to advance the ball into the frontcourt. Out of the timeout, Roberts attempted a step-back three-pointer from the right wing, but it fell short and Raymond was able to corral the rebound. After a Le Moyne foul with one second left, the Skyhawks were able to run out the clock.
