Lauren Nichols (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) and freshman
Mckenzie Bergdoll (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) pitched the Le Moyne College softball team to wins over Bloomfield College and Fairmont State University on Sunday afternoon at the DiamondPlex. The Dolphins defeated Bloomfield, 1-0, and edged Fairmont State, 4-3.
The Dolphins scored the only run in the game with Bloomfield in the fifth inning. Freshman center fielder
Dominique Russo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) singled with one out, but was retired at second as freshman left fielder
Jillian Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass./Tantasqua Regional) reached on a fielder's choice. After a single by senior catcher
Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn), Dunn scored on an error by the catcher.
Nichols earned the win after striking out six over six-plus innings, while yielding just three hits. Junior
Skylar Rechner (Lacombe, Alberta/Lacombe Composite/Corning C.C.) earned a save after retiring the only batter she faced with inherited runners on first and second. Taylor Galyean took the loss after allowing the unearned run, while striking out nine.
Le Moyne opened the scoring against Fairmont State with a run in the first inning. Nicolosi reached on a throwing error by the pitcher to start the frame and moved to second on a single by senior second baseman
Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston). After an out, senior designated player/pitcher
Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) singled through the left side to load the bases. After Nicolosi was retired at home, McManus scored from third on a passed ball.
The Dolphins doubled their lead in the second inning. After Dunn reached on a throwing error by the pitcher with two outs and then stole second, she scored on a single to center by Nicolosi.
Le Moyne added another run in the third. Senior first baseman
Taylor Artley (York Haven, Pa./Red Land) and Bellrose recorded back-to-back singles to start the inning. Junior shortstop
Kaily LaForce (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) followed with a single to left to drive in Artley.
The Dolphins completed their scoring with a run in the fourth inning. Russo opened the frame by reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman. After a pair of outs, McManus reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, which allowed Russo to score.
Fairmont State scored three runs in the seventh. With two outs, pitcher Kadi Cosgrove reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and then center fielder Jessie Weaver singled up the middle. Left fielder Haley McDaniel followed with a triple down the left field line to drive in Cosgrove and Weaver. Third baseman Jenny Stubbs then singled to left to plate McDaniel. Shortstop Courtney Worcester then singled through the right side to move Stubbs into scoring position and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Bellrose entered the circle and struck out the only batter she faced to end the game.
Bergdoll struck out five over six and two-thirds innings, while yielding three unearned runs and seven hits. Bellrose collected her second career save by striking out the only batter she faced. Cosgrove suffered the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) and eight hits over six innings.
Le Moyne (6-3) opens Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire University at 10:00 a.m. at the Auburndale Softball Complex in Jan Phyl Village, Florida.
