Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College Play of the Week presented by Sodexo for the week ending October 31 occurred during the volleyball game on Saturday at Ted Grant Court on senior day against the visiting Franklin Pierce University Ravens.
The Dolphins led two sets to zero, but found themselves trailing 24-21 in the third set. Le Moyne then scored five straight points to take the third set, 26-24, and earn a 3-0 Northeast-10 Conference win at home.
First-year outside hitter Emily LaRuffa (Rock Hill, N.Y./Monticello) recorded a kill off an assist from graduate setter
Emily Yancone (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) to trim the Le Moyne deficit to 24-22 in the third set. Yancone delivered a service ace next to make it 24-23, and the Dolphins tied the score at 24-24 with a kill from
Madeleine Kennedy (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) off an assist from Yancone.
The Le Moyne College Play of the week occurred next. Yancone served the ball over the net and Franklin Pierce attacked back. Yancone dove to record the dig and popped the ball up in the air to Emily Mosack (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Schroeder). Kennedy, who had slid diagonally to cover the middle of the court as the Ravens attacked from the left side, upon seeing Yancone's diving dig backpedaled to her left outside hitter spot. Mosack, running to the ball from the back left portion of the court, hit the ball over her head and behind her to Kennedy on the left side. Kennedy rose high in the air and thumped the ball with her right arm, sending the ball tumbling towards the ground. Franklin Pierce was able to get a hand on it and keep it from hitting the floor immediately, but the pace of Kennedy's shot made it difficult for the Ravens to handle the ball, and it flew out of bounds after the Ravens' second hit to give Le Moyne the lead and Kennedy her 17th kill of the match.Â
Yancone, who finished the contest with 31 assists, delivered a service ace to end the match and give the Dolphins a 26-24 win in set number three and a 3-0 conference victory at home.
The Le Moyne College volleyball team will travel to Colchester, Vt. to take on Saint Michael's College on Friday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. Â
