WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TAKES DOWN NEW HAVEN, 65-48, IN NE10 OPENER

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's basketball team earned their first NE10 Conference win of the season at home on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins took down University of New Haven Chargers by a score of 65-48 to improve their record to 2-0 on the year.

Le Moyne scored the first basket of the game, a layup by Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) on an assist from Erin Fouracre (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie Central), but the Chargers scored the next three baskets to go up 10-2, and established a 23-11 lead over the Dolphins by the end of the first quarter.

The Dolphins turned things around in the second period. They did not allow a New Haven basket in the second quarter until the final minute when Brie Pergola hit a three-pointer in transition.

Le Moyne started the second quarter with a high-low pass from Zimmerman to Emma Brinker (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) for a layup to cut the lead to 23-13.

After some good ball movement with just over six minutes left in the second quarter, Saeeda Abdul-Aziz (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen/Davidson) drew a foul in the lane and sank two free-throws, then two minutes later the redshirt-junior drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 23-23. Abdul-Aziz finished with a game-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds during her first Northeast-10 Conference battle.

Within the final two minutes of the first half, redshirt-freshman Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) knocked down an elbow jumper then converted a layup, Fouracre delivered a pass to Abdul-Aziz for a layup, and Abdul-Aziz drained a three point field goal to put Le Moyne up 32-23.

Pergola scored the only field goal of the second quarter for New Haven with 15 seconds left. Le Moyne outscored the Chargers 22-3 in the second period, and went into the halftime locker room with a 33-26 lead.

Pergola made a pull up jumper in transition to open up the second half scoring, and Fouracre found Zimmerman running the floor for a layup at the 6:31 mark of the third quarter to put Le Moyne up 35-28.

With 4:15 left in the third quarter, Abdul-Aziz drew a double team on the left side of the floor and kicked it out to Fouracre behind the three-point line. Fouracre drained the three-pointer to give the Dolphins a 40-32 lead. The senior point guard kept the team composed as they absorbed an early first quarter run by the Chargers and clawed back into the game. Fouracre finished the game with a stat line of 14 points, six assists and five rebounds in 39:44 minutes played.

The teams went back and forth to start the fourth quarter, but with 7:32 left in the game junior guard Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) got to the free throw line and converted both free-throws to put the Dolphins back up by double-digits, and another great pass inside from Brinker to Zimmerman put Le Moyne up 52-40 with 6:52 left in the contest. The Chargers would not get within 10 points for the rest of the fourth quarter, and the Dolphins came away with a big 65-48 NE10 victory on Ted Grant Court. Zimmerman finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Dolphins, while Brinker finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Le Moyne College women's basketball team will travel to Albany, N.Y. on Tuesday, November 23 to take on The College of Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. EST.
