SOFTBALL WINS NIGHTCAP, 1-0, TO EARN SPLIT WITH ADELPHI

Garden City, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 1-0 win over Adelphi University in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers took the opening game, 3-0.

After six scoreless innings to start the nightcap, the Dolphins scored the game's only run in the top of the seventh. Junior Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) led off with a double to left center and was replaced at second by junior pinch-runner Taylor Cox (Neversink, N.Y./Tri-Valley Secondary School). Following a line out, junior right fielder Victoria Catalano (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) tripled to left center to drive in Cox.

The Panthers got the tying run to second in the bottom of the seventh, but the next batter struck out to end the game.

Bennett earned her fifth victory of the season after striking out four over the seven innings. Lindsey Hibbs took the loss after yielding a run over seven innings.

Adelphi scored the only run it would need in the opener in the third inning. Third baseman Ashley Lombardi tripled down the right field line with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by shortstop Amanda Owens.

The Panthers added two runs in the fifth inning without getting a hit. First baseman Faith Camilleri and right fielder Kendall Winn drew back-to-back walks on eight consecutive balls to start the frame. After a pitching change and a walk by catcher Angela Lignelli to load the bases, Camilleri scored on a wild pitch. Lombardi then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to knock in Winn.

Senior Lauren Nichols (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) took the loss after allowing three runs over four-plus innings. Ally Muller earned her third win of the series after striking out eight over seven innings.

Le Moyne (8-12, 8-12 NE10) begins its final series of the season on Saturday against Pace University.
