BASEBALL FALLS TO ADELPHI IN DECISIVE GAME OF NE10 SOUTHWEST DIVISION FINAL

Garden City, N.Y. – Third baseman Matt Alifano scored four runs to lead top-seeded Adelphi University to a 13-2 win over the second-seeded Le Moyne College baseball team in the third game of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships Southwest Division finals on Monday afternoon at Bonomo Memorial Field.

The Dolphins finish the season with a 16-9 record.

Alifano led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to center field.

The Panthers doubled their lead with a run on two hits in the second inning. Center fielder Cooper Johnson doubled to right field with one out, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single to left by second baseman Anthony Cipri.

Adelphi doubled its lead again with two runs in the third on a pair of hits. Catcher Jack Ryan and first baseman Michael Draskin drew back-to-back walks with one out. Following a fly out, left fielder Kyle Olson singled to center to drive in Ryan and force a pitching change. Johnson greeted the new pitcher with a single up the middle to knock in Draskin.

The Panthers scored for the fourth straight inning on two hits and a Le Moyne error. Cipri led off with a double to left field and moved to third as Alifano reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Right fielder Tim Feliz then singled to center to drive in Cipri.

Le Moyne got on the scoreboard in the fifth with a run without a hit. Junior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)), junior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and senior third baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Junior first baseman Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) then reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, which allowed Carroll to score.

The Dolphins cut their deficit to three with a run in the sixth on two hits. Senior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) singled to center with two outs and came around to score on a triple to left center by graduate student center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston).

Adelphi regained its five-run lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Alifano led off with a single to right center, moved to third on a single to right by Feliz and then scored on a single to right by Ryan. Following a Le Moyne pitching change, Draskin lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Feliz.

The Panthers pushed their lead to 8-2 with a run in the seventh. Alifano walked with two outs, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Feliz.

Adelphi put the game away with five runs on five hits in the eighth inning. Draskin led off with a single through the left side, pinch-hitter Alex Rende reached on a bunt single and Olson followed with a single to center to load the bases. Johnson then doubled to center to drive in Draskin and Rende. Following a pitching change and two outs, Alifano singled to second to plate Olson. After a walk by Feliz to load the bases again, Ryan drew a walk to force in Johnson and lead to another pitching change. Draskin walked on four pitches to plate Alifano with the game's final run.

Senior southpaw Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) took the loss after allowing four runs over two and two-thirds innings. Nicolas Luc earned his fifth win of the year after striking out six over five and two-thirds innings, while yielding two runs (one earned) and three hits.
