Garden City, N.Y. – Emily Whitman drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Adelphi University a 1-0 win over the Le Moyne College softball team in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field.
The Dolphins finish the season at 12-14.
The teams were each hitless through the first three innings before Adelphi struck for a pair of hits in the bottom of the fourth. The Panthers moved two runners into scoring position with one out, but they were left stranded.
The Panthers advanced a runner to third in the fifth inning, but she was thrown out at the plate after trying to score on a fly ball.
Le Moyne remained hitless into the seventh inning before recording back-to-back singles to the left side. A groundout advanced the runners to second and third, but the next batter struck out on three pitches to end the inning.
After the Dolphins went down in order in the top of the eighth, the Panthers plated the winning run in the bottom of the frame. Pinch-hitter Hannah Pineda worked a 10-pitch at-bat before reaching second on a dropped fly ball by the right field to open the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt, Pineda scored from third on a sacrifice fly to deep center by Whitman.
