BASEBALL CLOSES OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH SPLIT AGAINST SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE, 7-5, 0-7

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior pitcher/first baseman Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) struck out 13 batters to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 7-5 victory over Southern Connecticut State University in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Owls handed the Dolphins their first shutout loss of the season in the nightcap, 7-0.

With the split, the Dolphins dipped into second place in the NE10 Southwest Division. As the second seed in the NE10 Championships, the Dolphins will host seventh-seeded The College of Saint Rose in the first round on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.

Southern Connecticut State started the scoring with two runs in the first inning. After second baseman Anthony Zambito singled to open the game and the next batter struck out, center fielder Andrew Eng launched a home run well over the fence in right field for his sixth home run of the year.

The Dolphins answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Graduate student center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) drew a walk to start the inning and advance all the way around to third on a one-out wild pitch. After junior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) walked and took second on a passed ball, senior third baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) singled through the left side to plate Tuey. Roden then grounded out to the second baseman to knock in Nevins.

Le Moyne took the lead in the bottom of the second via the longball. Following a walk by senior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain), Tuey hit his team high-tying third home run of the season to right center.

The Dolphins tacked on three runs on three hits in the fourth. Junior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) led off with a single to the shortstop, moved to second on a groundout and came around to score on a double inside third base by Miller. Following a fly out and junior first baseman Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./Saint Francis) getting hit by a pitch, Miller scored from third on an error by the shortstop as Syta was hung up between first and second. Senior left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey) followed with a double down the right field line to drive in Syta.

The Owls got two of the runs back in the top of the fifth. Left fielder Izaiah Walker led off with a single in front of the plate, moved to second on a one-out walk by catcher Kevin Lucey and took third on a single to the 5-6 hole by shortstop Chad Fedeli. Following a strikeout, right fielder Peyton Farina singled to right center to drive in Walker and Lucey.

Southern Connecticut State scored once in the seventh and had the tying run at second base, but couldn't add any more runs. Fedeli drew a walk with one out and took second on a bunt single by Zambito. After a fly out, Eng singled through the right side to plate Fedeli. The next batter struck out swinging to end the game.

Roden improved to 4-0 on the year after tossing his first complete game as a Dolphin. His 13 strikeouts are the most by a Dolphin since current top pitching prospect of the Dodgers, Josiah Gray, recorded 13 against Pace on May 8, 2018 in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Tuey, Miller and Wilson each had two hits in the contest. Brandon White took the loss for the Owls after allowing four runs on three hits and seven walks over three innings, while striking out five.

Southern Connecticut State scored four times in the third inning of the nightcap. Fedeli singled to left field with one out and Zambito followed with a walk. After a strikeout, Eng singled to right field to plate Fedeli and Zambito. Third baseman Mike Ferrett followed with a double down the right field line to drive in Eng. First baseman Jack Drewry then singled to left center to knock in Ferrett.

The Owls added two runs in the seventh. After Farina walked to start the inning, Eng blasted another home run down the right field line for a 6-0 lead.

SCSU completed the game's scoring in the eighth. Lucey walked with one out, moved to third on a double by Fedeli and scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center by Farina.

Junior righty Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) took the loss after yielding four runs over six innings, while striking out eight. Steve Phillips earned his first win of the year for the Owls after striking out seven over six innings, while allowing just one hit. Jeffrey Walsh earned his first save after tossing three hitless innings.
