WOMEN'S TENNIS OPENS NE10 ACTION WITH 7-0 WIN AT SAINT MICHAEL'S

Colchester, Vt.. - The Le Moyne College women's tennis team opened Northeast-10 Conference play with a 7-0 win over St. Michael's College on Tuesday afternoon.

"Road victories are always great in the Northeast-10," said head coach Jeff Lonczak '03. "Our women were truly up to the challenge. We set the tone in doubles without losing a game. Everyone played well and we're excited to get out to Flushing to compete at our regional."


The Dolphins claimed the first point of the day by winning all three matches in the doubles competition without dropping a single set. In the third doubles spot, freshman Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos De Manta) and senior Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) defeated Emma Posada and Sarah Knickerbocker, 6-0.  In the second doubles spot, sophomore Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) and graduate student Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) took down Abby Edelmann and Bree Controneo, 6-0, and in the first doubles spot, senior Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ted Ankara College Foundation HS) and junior Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) finished it off for the Dolphins with a 6-0 victory over Ava Albis and Elly Mckenna. 

The Dolphins continued to dominate in the singles matches. In the number six singles spot, Fernandez took down Knickerbocker, 8-0, and in the number five singles spot, Barona swept Posada, 8-0. Lilligren defeated McKenna 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth singles spot, while Controneo tested Nunez before going down 6-3, 6-2 in the number three singles match. Pepper won convincingly in the number two singles match, 6-1, 6-1 over Edelmann. In the first singles spot, Oz blanked Albis, 6-0, 6-0.

Le Moyne improves to 2-0 on the season and will compete next in the ITA East Regionals at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. starting on Friday, September 17.
