WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TAKES DOWN PACE 55-41

Syracuse, N.Y. - Junior guard Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) delivered her second double-double of the season to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 55-41 Northeast-10 Conference victory over visiting Pace University on Ted Grant Court Wednesday evening.

"Our key is to always keep [our opponent] 56 and under, we did that, that's one of our game goals. I think it was just an overall team effort against a tough Pace team at home, it's been a while since we played here, and everybody just came in - that's what we talked about in the locker room right before the game - it's not just gonna be one person, everybody's got to do their part and whether it's showing up on the stat sheet or not, I think everybody contributed who went in and the bench was unbelievable," said Le Moyne Head Coach Mary Grimes after the win.

Baker finished the game with 13 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists in 34 minutes of action.

At this point in the year, there is not much Baker could do that would surprise her head coach.

"Toya.. sometimes I don't see all the things she does, she had a quiet double-double in my eyes and she's just continually working hard and working on her game to improve," said Coach Grimes about Baker after the game.

The Dolphins held the Setters to their lowest point total of the season, and limited Pace star Lauren Schetter to just 13 points, her lowest scoring output during any game so far this season.

The Dolphins came out in a full court zone press, and fell back into a newly installed 3-2 zone. The defensive adjustment by Coach Grimes made things difficult for the Setters on the offensive end in the first period. At the end of the first ten minutes Le Moyne led 10-6.

Le Moyne went on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter, led by Baker who contributed seven of her 13 points during the period. Baker got the quarter rolling with a steal and layup at the 8:33 mark, then redshirt-freshman forward Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) grabbed an offensive rebound and converted the putback with 7:24 left in the quarter. At the 6:08 mark Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) knocked down a three-point field goal off an assist from Erin Fouracre (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie Central), and less than a minute later Lexi Gruss (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) ripped a steal, pushed the ball up the floor and delivered an assist to Baker who finished the layup through contact, drew a foul and converted the free-throw. Saeeda Abdul-Aziz (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen/Davidson) knocked down a three-pointer on an assist from Gruss to put Le Moyne up 23-6 with 4:13 left in the second quarter. Quain Kelsey made a layup for Pace to stop the run, but Abdul-Aziz knocked down another shot from long distance in the ensuing Le Moyne possession to give the Dolphins a 26-8 advantage. Le Moyne outscored Pace 22-9 during the second period, and held a commanding 32-15 lead at halftime.

Pace made some adjustments at the break and became more comfortable on offense to start the second half. The two sides currently sitting atop the NE10 Southwest Division standings went back and forth throughout the third period, with Le Moyne working hard to maintain their double-digit lead. Roberts provided the Dolphins with some much needed energy and physicality off the bench. Roberts scored two layups, grabbed four rebounds (two defensive and two offensive) and blocked a shot during the third period.

"She's just been unbelievable. I always call her our 'X-factor' and she's definitely showing up in the stat sheet that way. She just works hard, everything I tell her in practice and the game she soaks it up like a sponge and that's why she keeps getting better," Coach Grimes said of her redshirt-freshman forward.

Layups by Zimmerman, Gruss, and Roberts at the beginning of the fourth quarter gave Le Moyne their largest lead of the game, a 51-29 advantage with 7:11 remaining in the contest.

The Setters came storming back into the game, going on a 12-0 run, beginning with two free-throws from Naya Rivera with 5:08 remaining and ending with a three-point field goal from Lauren Hackett at the 3:52 mark.

The 'Phins then dug deep and did not allow another Pace point for the remainder of the game.

Zimmerman came up with a crucial transition block and rebound with 1:40 remaining. Fouracre broke Le Moyne's six-minute scoring drought by knocking down two free-throws with 0:47 remaining in the fourth quarter, putting the Dolphins up 53-41.

Pace forward Lauren Schetter finished the game with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The win improves the Dolphins record to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference competition. Following the loss Pace drops to 11-2 on the season and 5-1 in NE10 contests.

The Le Moyne College women's basketball team will next be in action on Saturday, January 8 at 1:00 p.m. EST when they take on Stonehill College on Ted Grant Court.
