WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EARNS 10TH CONFERENCE VICTORY WITH WIN OVER SAINT ROSE

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's basketball team and their stifling 3-2 zone defense held the visiting College of Saint Rose to just 46 points, avenging an early season defeat to the Golden Knights and earning their second consecutive conference victory on Ted Grant Court by a score of 58-46.

"That was our main goal, to hold them 56 and under, and they average 53, so credit to our team for holding them to less than their average. We really tried to extend [the zone] in the second half, moving Jenna [Zimmerman] up, to disrupt their vision a little bit more, and move the pace along a little bit more, and we doubled the low post, I thought we did well there too. Giving them one shot a lot of times, and not giving them second chance opportunities is what we really strive to do and I think we did that today."

After a tough loss on the road to Franklin Pierce, during which Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) was limited by foul trouble throughout the entire contest and finished with zero points, the junior guard and the rest of the squad have gotten right back on track since they returned to Ted Grant Court.

For the second consecutive game Baker set a career-high in steals. Baker ripped a previous career-high of five steals during the Dolphins' 74-63 conference bounce-back victory at home against Assumption on Saturday, and then outdid her own incredible defensive performance on Tuesday, grabbing a new career-high of seven steals against the Golden Knights.

Baker's seven steals is the most any Le Moyne player has recorded during a single game since Vandell Andrade tallied the same amount on January 30, 2016 against Franklin Pierce.

The 5'9" junior guard's 12 accumulated steals during the last two games is the most any Dolphin player has recorded during a two-game span since 2002.

Baker was active and engaged from the jump, helping the Dolphins establish a 14-9 lead after the first ten minutes with a first quarter stat line of five points, four defensive rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block. She then went 4-4 from the free-throw line during the second quarter and the Dolphins entered the halftime locker room with a 24-19 lead.

Le Moyne forward Emma Brinker (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) got going during the second half, finishing the game with her third consecutive double-double. The 6'2" senior scored eight of her game-high 18 points during the third quarter, helping the Dolphins extend their lead during the penultimate period.

With under two and a half minutes to play in the third quarter, senior guard Erin Fouracre (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie Central) and junior guard Lexi Gruss (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) each drilled a three-point field goal on back-to-back Le Moyne possessions to give the Dolphins a 43-33 lead with 1:43 left in the period.

Fouracre once again delivered a stellar performance for Le Moyne, finishing the win with 11 points (on 4-7 shooting from the field), six assists, five rebounds and two steals during 37 minutes of action. The 5'7 guard provided five of her six assists during the second half. Fouracre has established herself as one of the best players in the Northeast-10 Conference this season, and has continually displayed a stoic confidence and poise in crucial moments down the stretch of close games as Le Moyne's iron-woman lead guard.

Gruss and redshirt-freshman forward Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) each played 17 active minutes off the bench for Le Moyne. All season long, the two players have been extremely important pieces to the 'Phins rotation coming off the bench, providing whatever the Dolphins need on a game-to-game basis in order to contribute to the team's success.

"I think they're just steady," Coach Grimes said of Gruss and Roberts. "They're X factors and some things that they do don't show up in the stat sheet, like boxing out, Haedyn is unbelievable inside, just being a presence defensively, she was awesome. And then Lexi, she continues to grow every game, whether it be offensively or defensively, she had a big presence in there, and can give Erin, Lytoya and those guys a good break."

Brinker continued her strong play during the final period, scoring six of Le Moyne's 10 points during the quarter, pulling down four rebounds (two offensive boards and two defensive boards) and blocking a shot.

The Dolphins improved to 12-3 overall and 10-2 against conference competition following the win, while the Golden Knights dropped to 3-12 overall and 2-9 against NE10 opponents.

The Le Moyne College women's basketball team will be back in action on Thursday, February 3 when they travel to Southern Connecticut State to take on the Owls at 5:30 p.m. EST.
