Winter Haven, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team dropped both games of their Friday afternoon doubleheader at The Spring Games. The Dolphins fell to Hillsdale College 12-4 in their first game of the day, then nearly made an incredible comeback in the bottom of the 7
th inning during game number two against Dominican College but came up short and lost to the Chargers 7-6.
Le Moyne found themselves trailing Hillsdale 4-0 at the end of the 4
th inning.
Junior center fielder
Isabelle Boudreau (Memramcook, New Brunswick/Mathieu-Martin/Pace) hit a one-out base hit ground ball between the second baseman and the bag into center field, then stole second base during the next Le Moyne at-bat to give the 'Phins a runner in scoring position.
Senior catcher
Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) came to the plate with two outs in the inning. During her at-bat, Boudreau took third base after a pitch was thrown in the dirt.
Barrett hit a hard ground ball to the right side of the infielder that ate up the second baseman, allowing Boudreau to score and Barrett to reach safely.
Brooke Nicolaos (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) came up next in the four spot, and the sophomore second baseman drove a 1-2 pitch into center field that brought Barrett around to score from second.
Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) smashed a two-run homerun (her second of The Spring Games) over the left field fence to tie the game at 4-4.
Hillsdale responded immediately with three runs scored, including two homeruns, in the bottom of the 5
th.
Hillsdale tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the 6
th to open up an eight-run lead, which ended the game.
Dominican held a 6-0 lead over the Dolphins in the middle of the 5
th during Le Moyne's second game of the day, but the Dolphins got two runs back in the bottom of the inning.
Junior first baseman
Mckenzie Bergdoll (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) singled into center field to lead off the inning, then senior outfielder
Taylor Cox (Neversink, N.Y./Tri-Valley Secondary School) singled into right field to give the 'Phins runners on first and second with no outs.
Victoria Catalano (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) hit a ground ball to move both runners over.
Junior left fielder
Dominique Russo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) ripped a single up the middle that drove in both runners to trim Le Moyne's deficit to 6-2.
Dominican got a run back in the top of the 6
th.
In the bottom of the 7
th, Le Moyne was down to their final out, trailing 7-2, with runners on second and third. Russo hit another single up the middle to score Mackenzie Konik (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and move Cox to third.
Barrett hit a hard ground ball up the middle to drive in Cox and trim the deficit to 7-4. Nicolaos hit the ball to the shortstop next, but the throw to first pulled the Dominican first baseman off the bag, allowing Russo to score from third.
Dybacz hit a ground ball down the third base line for an RBI single to make it 7-6, but the Dominican pitcher got an infield pop-up to end the game.
The Le Moyne College softball team will play their final doubleheader of The Spring Games tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. against Shepherd University and Wayne State University.
