SOFTBALL SPLITS FRIDAY AFTERNOON DOUBLEHEADER WITH ASSUMPTION

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team split their Friday afternoon doubleheader against the visiting Assumption University Greyhounds. The Dolphins, playing in the Le Moyne College softball complex for the first time this season, jumped on the Greyhounds in game one and earned a 8-0 victory in six innings.

Redshirt-Sophomore right-hander Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) delivered six innings of shutout softball in the circle, and the 'Phins scored four runs during the bottom of the 4th to cruise to an 8-0 win.

First year right-hander Julia Panarella (Southington, Conn./Southington) started game two in the circle for Le Moyne and recorded seven of her first nine outs via strikeout. Sophomore right-hander Lindsey Dobbs (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, and conceded just one hit.

The Greyhounds got a run during the top of the 4th in game two, then two more in the top of the 6th to earn a 3-2 win.

Senior catcher Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI in game one, then followed it up with a double and a base hit during game two for a team-high five hits on the day.

Le Moyne scored one run during the bottom of the 1st in game one to take an early lead.

Isabelle Boudreau (Memramcook, New Brunswick/Mathieu-Martin/Pace) led off the inning with a bunt single, then stole second base with one out. The junior center fielder advanced to third on a wild pitch, then Le Moyne's three-hitter CJ Barrett drove in Boudreau with a hard base hit through the right side of the infield.

Junior shortstop Makenzie Konik (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led off the bottom of the 4th single with a bunt single towards the right side of the infield.

Dominique Rinaldi (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) put the ball in play during the next Le Moyne at-bat, and an error by the Assumption infield allowed Rinaldi to reach safely and moved Konik over to third. Rinaldi promptly stole second base during the next at-bat.

Dominique Russo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) singled to the left side, which drove in Konik and moved Rinaldi to third, then Russo advanced to second on a ball in the dirt. A passed ball, and then an error on the throw to the plate allowed both Rinaldi and Russo to score and put the 'Phins up 4-0.

With nobody on base and still zero outs in the inning, Boudreau slapped a single into left field, and then stole her second bag of the game to put herself in scoring position.

With one out, Barrett ripped a single into center field which moved Boudreau to third.

Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) came to the plate next and lifted a fly ball into left field which allowed the speedy Boudreau to easily tag-up and score, giving Dybacz an RBI sacrifice fly.

Bennett struck out two batters during a 1-2-3 top of the 5th.

With one out in the bottom of the 6th, Brooke Nicolaos (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) singled through the left side of the infield, then Maddy Sehnert (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) came in to pinch run.

With two outs in the inning, Dybacz ripped a single up the middle, then a double steal during the next at-bat put Dybacz and Sehnert on second and third, respectively.

Victoria Catalano (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) drew a walk to load the bases, which brought Elaina Kassap (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) to the plate.

Kassap smashed a ball into right center field. The Assumption right fielder got a good jump on it, but the ball was moving quickly towards the wall, and soared just beyond her outstretched glove for a bases clearing double, which put the 'Phins up 8-0 and ended the game.

During game two, with two outs and a runner on first for Assumption in the top of the 2nd inning, Abigail Larson ripped a double to put runners on second and third. Panarella then recorded her sixth strikeout of the game to end the inning and keep the contest scoreless.

Kali Scirocco hit an RBI double in the top of the 4th to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead. Le Moyne answered back during the bottom of the inning.

Barrett led off the top of the 4th for the 'Phins with another single through the right side of the infield. Taylor Cox (Neversink, N.Y./Tri-Valley Secondary School) came in to pinch run for Le Moyne's catcher.

With two outs in the inning, Kassap hit a pitch hard into right center field for her second double of the afternoon, and Cox scored all the way from first to tie the game at 1-1.

The Greyhounds regained the lead during the top of the 6th inning.

Larson hit another double, then Alexis Charbonneau hit an RBI single into center field. An RBI ground ball to the right side of the infield later in the inning gave the Greyhounds an insurance run.

Barrett's bat stayed hot during the bottom of the 6th, when she led off the inning with a double over the center fielder, but Assumption starting pitcher Anna Tassone, a first-year left-hander, got an infield popup, a ground ball, and another infield popup to end the inning without giving up a run.

Dobbs got through the top of the 7th without allowing a run, then the 'Phins grabbed their bats, down to their final three outs and facing a two-run deficit.

With one out in the bottom of the 7th, Frankie Larobardiere (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter.

Larobardiere drove a pitch to the opposite field that got over the right field fence for a solo homerun, cutting Le Moyne's deficit to 3-2.

Tassone then got a fly ball and a strikeout to end the game and secure the 3-2 win for Assumption.

The Dolphins will next be in action on Tuesday, April 19 when they travel to D'Youville University for a doubleheader against the Saints.
