Orchard Park, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team closed out its regular season with a 5-2 setback to Niagara University on Saturday afternoon at South Towns.
The Purple Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning the doubles competition. Le Moyne picked up the first win of the day as freshman
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and senior
Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) recorded a 6-0 victory at the third spot over Kirah Regales and Emma Shea. Coral Rodriguez and Madigan Humiston tied doubles at one apiece with a 6-4 win at the second spot over graduate student
Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and sophomore
Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott). Elena Mayet and Mercedes Velasco clinched the point with a 7-5 win over senior
Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS) and junior
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) at the first position.
Niagara won four of the sixth matches in the singles competition to clinch the match. At the first position, Rodriguez defeated Barona, 6-3, 6-1. Jaida Borg was a 6-3, 7-5 winner at the third spot over Nunez. Erika Gonzalez registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the fourth position over Pepper. Velasco turned in a 6-3, 6-2 win at the fifth spot.
Oz improved to 14-1 in dual matches with a 6-0, 6-2 victory for the Dolphins over Megan Gamble at the second position. Fernandez topped Regales in the only three-set match of the afternoon, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 10-4.
Le Moyne (13-5) now awaits word on a possible bid to the NCAA Championships. The Dolphins were ranked fifth in the first rankings of the season on Wednesday.
